father kelly’s reel

father kelly’s reel

I searched through the various submissions of this tune, and none seem to be like I’ve heard the tune played.
I’m not sure how this site works, but it seems that all the various submissions of this tune I looked at had identical ABC and sheet music. If someone submits a different version of a tune, does this site accept it, or does it only show one version of a given tune regardless of how many variants are submitted?
Also, though two Father Kellys, in D and in G, are here, the listing of recordings is identical to both. I doubt that every CD listed has both the D and the G versions on it and suspect rather that the listing shows the occurance of the title, not the tune. (In other words, ten different tunes which happen to share the same title would show up as being the same tune?)
But as I recall the version played around here goes up to high B in the third bar of the second part, maybe like this:
g2dg bagf
Or is this a different tune?

Re: father kelly’s reel

Fr. PJ Kelly wrote many beautiful tunes, as well as jigs. There is a recording of an interview with him before he died last year, illustrated with his tunes,and with him describing his life, including the time spent in Fiji, kicking around somewhere. Possibly Clare FM trad archives.

Re: father kelly’s reel

To clarify some of your confusion:

When you search for a tune, you get back a list that includes all the alternate names for the tunes, so that many of the links will be repetitive and lead to the same tune. (A bug in the search feature if you ask me.) For any particular tune, variants can be found in the comments section.

You’ll probably have better luck in your case by searching using JC’s tune finder:

http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/tunefind

which will look across the whole Web for ABC.

Also mulvihill’s?

The three-part reel called "Mulvihill’s" on Paddy in the Smoke sounds quite a bit like Father Kelly’s too?

Re: father kelly’s reel

Easter Day Jig has a similar list of recording because it uses the title Father Kelly’s.
If that poster is listening ~ you can edit titles on your submissions. There is another tune which might have resulted in similar confusion. Fortunately all appears well in that case;
The Sally Gardens
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/98
The title is like Down by the Sally Gardens ~
An Traigh Mughdhorna
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/1314
The recordings list seems accurate for each.
Including a CD which does have both tunes;

Re: father kelly’s reel

Good link Kenny, glad to see your wisdom is still present ~ ditto, check the comments:

RDC, why not add your transcription to the ‘comments’ of whatever tune is closest to the one you’re asking about. I love finding alternate takes in the comments to try. If you need the dots you can always cut-and-paste to Concertina.Net’s "ABC Convert-A-Matic" ~

Re: father kelly’s reel

Agree that the Father Kelly No.1 possibilities shown here on the Yellow Board (and there are many of them) are very confusing. None of them are like the one most commonly played in sessions which is the "G" version. A google search turned this one up at http://www.novasession.org/Bog%20Kit/Tunes/bwreels-17.abc.

Is this the 3-part tune you’re on about?

Derry Craig Wood

Something like that. I was following through on airport drawig attention to the tune.
"Derry Craig Wood" is "Mulvihill’s Reel"
But if you follow the recordings list on "Derry Craig Wood" back through a link ~ for instance;
http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/2812
Set Dances Of Ireland: Music For Listening And Dancing by Various Artists
~ you end up at "Mulvihill’s Jig"
However, the following recording will get you to "Derry Craig Wood" [a reel]

On the matter of father kelly

Somehow I missed Kenny’s link to "Derry Craig Wood" earlier.
I thought I had looked at it. In the ‘Comments ‘Donough helps clear up some matters on Father Kelly’s various compositions. Richard, I am still not sure which Father Kelly’s tune you play;
"But as I recall the version played around here goes up to high B in the third bar of the second part, maybe like this:
g2dg bagf "

Re: father kelly’s reel

Thanks Kenny, Muse and all - had we not had this discussion, I might have posted Mulvihill’s Reel (especially since Paddy in the Smoke starts with the C part). I was just about to add my version of Father Kelly’s to the comments for #1 when I discovered it’s there (thanks lazyhound). Maybe that’s the setting you’re after GDC?

Re: father kelly’s reel

Oops, I meant RDC as in Richard D Cook (guess I was stuck in abc mode)

Re: father kelly’s reel

Thanks all! The links that Bannerman and Ceolachan provided sent me to exactly the tune as they play it here at session.
In fact I almost have it memorised, as I’ve heard it so many times, just never got the notes!

Re: father kelly’s reel

Could you post your version in Comments?
I am still curious about the part where you go to the high b.
Thanks.

Re: father kelly’s reel

So am I… Please! :-)

Don’t forget to add the link from here to there as well…

Re: father kelly’s reel

About that high b thing, now that I’ve worked on the version mentioned above, I realise that I just mis-remembered the tune. It really only goes to high A. Sorry about that.
