I really like Kevin Burke's version on his 'In Tandem' album with Ged Foley. The way he likes to emphasize the backbeat fits this tune perfectly. In the same set, this technique also gives a unique flavor to the Graf Spey.
"The top three fiddlers in the world of Irish music go head-to-head in this clip from Absolutely Irish, the all-star traditional Irish music concert on public TV created by Mick Moloney."
There are so many things wrong just from this description; if you can't tell that this is not Irish music as it should be you need to be listening to the real stuff. And I don't mean players living in Ireland either. There and musicians in America and other parts of the world playing amazing Irish music but this is not it. Shame too, because I like most of Liz's playing, but this is not right.
Well, if cos is talking about the video, I agree. I don't care for their playing at all. However, since the comment came immediately after mine about Kevin Burke, I naturally assumed he was responding to me, rather than the video in question. Considering the bluegrass portion of his comment, I'm tending to think that I overreacted. Oops!
Locally, there seems to be a tendency to infuse Irish with all sorts of other influences. The worst is Jazz. Yuck.
Let me guess: This is another stab at non-native Irish folk playing Irish music. Diaspora, etcetera. *Yawns*
I doubt anybody seriously thinks there is anything wrong with non irish playing irish music. Its accessible to all i think, and anybody can eventually play it if they tread the right path just takes time. The problem is most dont go about learning it right and take offence when told their sound is not right because they have relied to heavily on notation and metronomes and the like.If you go about learning in the traditional way you will get there no matter your nationality, loads of players have,Anyway i hope so i have a north of England accent and its not going to stop me getting my sound near enough.
I Suppose i better address the topic at hand which is probably a first for me,The title of the utube clip killed me 8).
Cheers

In fairness to Cos he didn't mention if 'the bloody bunch of posers' were Irish born or not, or if it had a bearing on the performance. Surely it is a well known fact that only for the Diaspora and their off spring, traditional music in Ireland would have died on its feet.
Yes 3 great fiddle players they are too but it's definately NOT *traditional Irish* music they are playing, more like bluegrass or jazz. Nothing wrong with that of course, personally I think its great, it's just misnamed. I agree with SWFL too Athena is very cute.
So kjay, if a friend had offered you a free ticket to go to this concert, you would have turned it down?
I sure didn't, and from an audience perspective, it was an incredible event. I liked the final DVD result as well, when it was shown in NY a few months ago. Have you seen the whole thing yet? Maybe you'll appreciate this segment more in context.
Fine fidders, indeed, better technicians than I may have time to become in this lifetime. Nice tunes, love the guitar work on much (not all) of it. Just personal taste, instead give John Doherty anytime. Or Martin Mulvihill. Or Frankie Gavin in a retro mood.
That said, good music, but nothing I have not heard (and perhaps better) from Celtic Fiddle Festival, versions One and Two.
Same moves, sames tricks, same showmanship, only none of it new. Irish Sopranos to take on Irish Tenors. Redundant, in a way. And, in my experience, with the novelty of being a "girl band" they will prosper better than CFF.
(Of course, to be fair, it all makes me wonder where CFF learned it all before they did it! Truism: After all, no one is completely "original".)
All said, a good show anyway.
Good music, rock on girls!
I'd be happy to hear these musicians anytime, and genuinely baffled by the begrudging comments , especially the one about it being more like bluegrass or jazz than Irish. No, it isn't. Perhaps you should post the link on a bluegrass or jazz forum telling them that.
Sorry Bren but I have to disagree. The music they are playing as absolutely fabulous but it is much more like the stuff we played in the trad Jazz band years ago than the *tradtional* Irish music we play and hear played here today.
Thanks, Irish fiddler-----I loved it, in fact I really liked Regina &
Nadya also, as I'm a jazzk/swing fiddler also. Ya' gotta love
those ladies----they ROCK !!!
Absolutely Irish again
Absolutely Irish again
This clip has been posted before, but I'm looking for the name of the 1st tune that the ladies all play together. Thanks!

Re: Absolutely Irish again
What a bloody bunch of posers and a horrible bluegrass streak through their playing.

What, pray tell, are they posing as? And what are they really?
