Sad to see that Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners died today, age 73, lost his battle with cancer. One of Folk Music's greatest characters in my opinion. Rest in peace Ronnie.
Seven Drunken Nights, Quare Bungle Rye, Zoological Gardens are just some of the classics we'll remember Ronnie by - definitely a unique voice and personality. He'll be greatly missed but will remain forever in our memories for the great legacy he's left behind.
Miss you ronnie! proud to be your neighbour! Mum went to school with Phelim. Thanks for all your kind words!' I've missing you for a long time'
you will be happy now to meet your wife in heaven!
What a giant he was. Nothing fake or cute about him. No affectations. Of the people. No elitism.
People like Ronnie, the Dubs, even Shane and the Pogues, they're like a good slagging for 'the music'. Don't be so precious and stop taking yourself so seriously. The next time you get into some argument about some obscure piece of nonsense, just forget it, think of Ronnie, raise a pint and play a tune. Quit being such a cute bowsie.
What a loss to Irish music - Ronnie was one of the best, and no one could match him for personality. We've lost a lot of great Irish balladeers over the last couple years.
Does anyone know if there's a way to download The Ballad of Ronnie Drew in the US? I'm trying to find it to play on the air tomorrow night as part of a tribute my radio station is doing. Universal Music, of course, most likely won't get back to us 'til Doomsday.
One of the first songs I learned on my own as a kid was "Weila Waile" from one of the Dubliners albums on the Major Minor label - thanks, Ronnie, and God bless.
Ronnie Drew RIP

With just one year to go before shuffling off this mortal coil, Ronnie getting down hard with the Dropkick Murphys:

the finished product:

"raise a pint and play a tune!"

Re: Ronnie Drew RIP
He had the front page of The Times obituaries to himself today.
He always sounded as if he had done all the things he sang about!..
RIP.
