Please identify name of this tune

This is a tune I remember from playing one of the Holst Suites for band or the Vaughn Williams Folk Song Suite. Can anyone identify?

Re: Please identify name of this tune

I think it's some form of Dives And Lazarus, a tune VW obviously liked as he composed a set of variations on it which is one of his best-known pieces. It has many names and probably some variations. In Ireland it has been called The Star Of The County Down and Bannbridge Town, the first being the title of a song that goes to it.

This setting may be, for all I know, one VW recorded in the English countryside or else one he devised himself. Tunes or variations persisting in England didn't necessarily get into the Irish repertoire, and may remain unfamiliar to its players; and as far as I know, VW didn't collect in Ireland, though I could be mistaken here.

Steb - here is the answer that you were looking for. In the Vaughn Williams suite it is "Dives and Lazarus" (an English tune). However variants of this tune (albeit with different time signatures, and some alteration of the melody occur throughout Britain and Ireland. For example, "Star of the County Down" (Ireland) and "Gilderoy" (Scotland).

(I should add, this tune by whatever name is normally played in 4/4 time.)

Looks like nicholas just got there before me! However, it looks like great minds think alike - wouldn't you agree, nicholas?

Indeed! I didn't mean to steal your thunder, honest!!..

Re: Please identify name of this tune

No thunder stolen, I assure you, nicholas! It was curious though, was it not, that we both independently picked up up on the "Star of the County Down" connection. And yes, this "cross-posting" thing is a nuisance at times ....!

... and of course, (forgot to mention) - you always see the lightning just before you hear the thunder ...!

Re: Please identify name of this tune

Thanks much all for your help. Now I don't have to keep calling it "That Holst Tune."
