Tune exchanging

Tune exchanging

This is an attempt at 21st century aural ~ tradition (?)
I am willing to learn a few of your favourite tunes by ear. So, where to begin?
Is there one tune, which you know very well, & really enjoy playing? Yes, just one tune. Remember, I want to learn the tune(s) by ear. Which means I need a recording ~ YouTube, mp3 . . . & I would like tunes which have not yet been submitted. This way there is no temptation to glance at the abc's. Also I won't be stuck with listening to a MIDI.
That's it;
- 1 good tune from each of you
- recording available online
- the tune has not been submitted.
Thanks in advance.
Now I am going to break all my rules.
The 1st new tune I am going to learn has been picked from the latest tune submitted;
John Murphy's Swedish

So I really need some help since I am about to learn this tune just from a MIDI recording.
Cheers!

Re: Tune exchanging

please don't bother with the midi.

It's not an easy challenge though you set us. It's hard finding decent old tunes that aren't represented in the data base. Decent unobscure tunes anyway.

Re: Tune exchanging

If anyone wants to come up with a recording of 'John Murphy's Swedish' that would be grand. The MIDI is rather crude.Yes, I definitely prefer a recording.
The only important thing is that the tune is one you really enjoy. & of course i need to a hear a version of each tune. If it is in the database that is O.K. I promise not to peek. There are some tunes which are not yet submitted. '42nd Highlanders' Farewell' from Fair Warnng * for instance. Some of the 'recordings' do not have all of their tunes in this database.

Re: Tune exchanging

I agree with Michael--you can ignore the abcs and dots, why not learn tunes that people play a lot?

One of my favorite tunes is the Roscommon Reel. Go to my profile and follow the Sound Lantern link. I've even made it easy to learn by ear--I recorded it in bits, and slowly.

Re: Tune exchanging

Random,

Good luck with the tunes by ear thing, it defiitely works 4 me.

As an insight, I learn the tunes in a slightly different manner.

1. hear a tune that I like / must have or session regular

2. either record it from the session or find an online version, better still get it from a recording of Molloy, Crawford etc. I use Irish flute at Podbean.

3. If you don't have someone who will teach it to you aurally, use slowdown software such as 'best practice' to break it up into phrases.

4. slow it down so that you can follow the notes, and play away until youv'e got the tune.

5. I use the abcs from multiple sources to help with tricky parts that either I can't hear properly or can't seem to work out.

6. Bottle of red to accompany

Hope it helps.

Recording of favourite tune?

Thanks for the advice. Some how I missed my mark. If your favourite tune is in the tune collection I would still like to know about it. I am not tryng to exchange "obscure" tunes at all. In fact I want a tune that you just cannot get enough of.
Believe it or not there are good session tunes which have not been submitted.
I keep noticing tune requests which go unfilled. It seems like everytime I read a comment regarding the 'request' tab it is negative.
That does not have to be a problem as long as there is a way to exchange these waifs & strays. Besides I spent last night listening to a MIDI. So I know there is a better way to hear your favourites'
Cheers!

Re: Tune exchanging

Will and I have submitted to Sound Lantern, as has Ptarmigan. *Please* go check his (Ptarmy's) stuff out - it's totally brilliant.

I think there are quite a lot of other people here who have submitted stuff to Sound Lantern too. Jim FIDDLE4, Clear Drops, Dickens Metrognome. There's probably loads more.

I do foresee a problem with Sound Lantern, though. Commercial recordings have been 'ironed out' so the version played is presumably *exactly* as the performers wanted it to be. Sound Lantern files generally aren't. And then, it becomes difficult to get what a stranger, who is not a proficient sound recordist, might be trying to impart, where playing with them in the flesh might be just fine.

Re: Tune exchanging

. . . someone who is not a proficient sound recordist ,. . . actually I enjoy some of those 'raw' recordings.
I will check out SoundLantern ~ any flute?

Re: Tune exchanging

I love sheet music; I just don't go there now. I am enjoying the paradigm shift ~
traditional music = exchanging tunes person to person.
Today I have a few new tunes to try over the weekend.
Thanks all of you!
from JACKB
~ 'John Murphy's Swedish'
from Will Harmon
~ 'Sergeant Early's Dream'
from Jim
~ 'Austen's Reel'
I will be listening & playing.
;)
