I am an Old Time player from the Mountains of Virginia. I play the fiddle, banjo, guitar, harmonica, mandolin, and bass and many other instruments. I’m am trying to master old time fiddle right now primarily and studying composition in College, focusing on the trombone there. I’m also a solo dancer, though I abhor competitions and the competition circuit, in short I dance and play for fun. I love the concertina, Noel Hill’s YouTube performance of "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" motivated me to buy one, and I am haphazardly learning that instrument as well, and have a good time putting mountain tunes to it, though of course I’d like to learn a few more Irish tunes. The Kilfenora Ceili Band turned me on to Ceili music, and I love Scottish tunes on the Pipes. I have long wanted to learn the Highland Bagpipes and will before I die I hope! Of great fascination to me is the history of tunes, and the development of the tradition in the regions where it is still carried on, The Mountains of Virginia being one of them. I am always looking for old tunes still played here, or tunes I hear from the old world that I know by another name, looking for links I guess you could say. I compose fiddle tunes in the traditional style, Southern Mountain Style it would be to me, and perhaps I will post a few if I grow so bold.
