Hi,
I HATE Hornpipes and if you like them I must hate you too!
Granted, there are some good hornpipes, but these are obvious exceptions and perhaps stand out all the more. Well, if you insist I must share a H'pipe with you, please select from these;
The Humours Of Ballyconnell, Jerry Daly's, The Re-haired boy (most A mixolydian HP will do actually, though they're only 1 in a 100!), Johnny Cope, The Londonderry HP, the Pride of Petravore, The Rights of Man, er... I guess that's all!

I'm also interested in the ORIGIN OF TUNE NAMES (and the stories associated with the tunes themselves)
(if anybody out there has any info about the subject -websites, reading suggestions, etc- don't hesitate to drop a line!)
WORK IN PROGRESS (I'm planning a blog on this so as to have more space):
§TitleCategory1: Onomatopeic (mimics a saliant rhytm);
(NB: the link is to the appropriate tune(s), not to the corresponding name in the database...)
§2: Commemorative (Person, Event, Place...These are legion but work only perphaps for those in hte know, the Title is bound to recall the event more than the tune);
§3: Inspirational I(perhaps the sound of the wind or a bird as a catalyst);
_http://thesession.org/tunes/display/6972 (see comments)
Inspirational II (from the fairies, a mood or stream of consciousness);
§C4: Descriptive I (rather rare and depending on rendition/interpretation/version);
Descriptive II (describes a musicain movement, not a sound);
_http://thesession.org/tunes/display/216 The Monsignor's Blessing (a fiddlers reel)
§C5: Deictic, (refers to a previous tune name, often ironicly)
§C6:

Q: -Whatever happened to 'rince' in 'Ceol Rince na hÉireann'? The craic' s not the same without dancers. (Where do Irish-dancers go when they grow up?) Is there a solution to that pb? Should we woo the dancers (that'd make a good tune title!) or start stepping to our own sound? (some Quebec fiddlers have been spotted doing just that!).. It's mending a bit it seems but there are still 2 almost antagonistic worlds out there, almost entirely cut out from each other; On the one hand wee girls in curls who seem to be happy to tap it out to the most awful strains from pianos, piano accordions and ghetto-blasters and, on the other hand, some speed-mad 'purists' who couldn't play slower (ie: at a steppin pace) if they tried.
Doesn't it strike you as odd? Is dance to ITM like fish to the Irish diet, or gaelge to the average conversation?

New Rubrics:
1)Tunes that are (theoretically) C+Dwhistle compatible:

'de la musique avant toute chose':
'Like all people who try to exhaust a subject, he exhausted his listeners.' (Oscar Wilde). I hope you'll excuse my tendency to often do this + hope you find my contributions (and provocations?) useful all the same.

Personal reminders: (questions to submit @ this adress):
