The Red Lyon Hornpipe

This tune appears in a few early manuscripts. The particular setting here is from John Geoghegan’s tutor for the "Pastoral or New Bagpipe" (c1743). It is in B flat major, but had to be submitted as G minor as B flat is not an option on this site. There is a version in Walsh’s "Third Book of Jiggs" (c1731) which is slightly different, and a quite different setting in the John Clare MS which can be found on Richard Robinson’s website.

Here is the Walsh setting (c/o Pete Stewart):

There are othe hornpipes given the name "Red Lion", including an alternative name for the College, or Sailor’s Hornpipe. The spelling "Lyon" helps to distinguish this one. Perhaps the reference is to a tavern or similar.
