“Bonny North Tyne” ~ C: Bob Ballantine

This transcription was made from several recordings of the composer playing his own tune… Here’s a YouTube of him doing that ~

Brucknell Folk Gathering - Bob Ballantine on Irish Whistle playing ‘Bonny North Tyne’.

"Bob is an inspiration for his melodies that he plays on an early model Susato whistle in D. He generally plays dance music from Northumberland. His favourite Scottish collection of tunes are very popular in the Border Country of England and Scotland. Bob now lives in Linton, Victoria" (Australia).

C: Billy Ballantine

Apologies, I lost attention, composed by Billy Ballantine and played by his son Bob. I had started out right and then cut and pasted and forgot to make the corrections again… More on Billy later.

This transcription is a mix from the playing of both father and son… I’ll be adding more later.

On further consideration, I’ve given the basics of Billy’s own take on his tune. However, he usually leaves that second ending, as I’ve given it, for the end, rather than playing up high for every repeat. So, here’s how he usually ends the repeats, without a first and second ending ~

& some hesitations thrown in by me on the second ending. I personally enjoy playing that rise to the high g, the second ending, every time…

I may add some other transcriptions from the playing of this by other musicians, or, I might luck out and one or more of you might contribute a take on this. It’s a fun waltz to play.
