This is a waltz for the big pipes, composed by Pipe Major George Stoddart, BEM, to commemorate a target in the Battle of the Somme. I learned it from recordings of Will Atkinson, the great Northumbrian moothie player; also it’s on an obscure Buddy McMaster cassette tape release, Glencoe Hall. Just a beautiful tune. The sheet music examples I could find were all written in 6/8 for some reason, so here it is in the more conventional waltz meter. Will’s rendition may be heard on the CD "Ranting and Reeling: Dance Music of the north of England."
The title is Longueval: the village lies on the 1916 front of the battle of the Somme.
