The return of… [dun dun dunnnnn] the SKYE COLLECTION!!!

Page 93, top of the page..

Hmmm… I really don’t think the key is Adorian because of the F naturals which threw me off… Or am I right in choosing the current key as the actual key?

Looks to me like G Major. The last note is not a resolution, but just leads back into the repeat, where the tune resolves into G. The F naturals are just accidentals and aren’t as important to the key signature as the F sharps that occur elsewhere.

If you were to think about accompanying, I think you’d use mostly G Major chords, with a few very brief C Major chords and an F Major in the measures containing the F naturals.

I think it’s more commonly heard in this form. I suspect it’s original a pipe (GHB) tune originally in A mix, brought down to G for the fiddle.

Key

I’m quite sure the piece is (here) in G mixolydian. Main chords are G and F with C as the "third chord." I’d agree with the guess that the original was a pope tune brought down from the written A mixolydian (which sounds closer to Bb mixolydian, but that’s another story isn’t it :)

This is in David Glen’s Collection of Highland Bagpipe Music, book 3 from the 19th c. the pipe setting goes:

Ben the Hoose

I have just spent the last couple of evenings transcribing the Hoose version of this tune. One day I might post it here…cracking tune on the fiddle and is going to be a favourite for a while!

Please do post it Rachael!

Thanks for the encouragement Tom…I will get round to it soon, promise! It may not be 100% "right" but close enough. Had it’s first airing this evening at a session and was great fun to play! :-)

Many thanks to BtH for the version I have just added. On their recording it goes like this…

ABABABCDEFEFCDEFEFCD

The last part is a simplified E and goes into Tamlin.

It is a reel but played ONE two three ONE two three One two. Lovely!

If you pick up any glaring errors do let me know and I will edit my setting :-)
