Seven comments

From Trian II. A really solid tune. By Liz Carroll.

There’s a few options for bars 4, 8 in first part, and also bar 5 in second part.

Pauline Conneely was a banjo player from Beford according to the sleeve notes in "An Tradisiun Beo" by Angelina carberry.

Pauline Conneely’s Reel

Pauline’s brother Mick Conneely is also a good fiddler, he made an album called Selkie a few years ago.

Conneely Family

The family were brought up in Bedford, although the dad (Mick senior) came from Connemara. Mick himself is a great fiddle player and has a wealth of tunes which obviously had an effect on his children who are all good traditional musicians - in fact Mick joins his son on a couple of tracks on the Silkie CD. His daughter, Bernie plays banjo with the Templehouse Céilí Band while Pauline, as well as being a good musician, is a fine Irish dancer and toured with Comhaltas back in the 1980s. We mustn’t forget Kathleen either who is also very competent on the tin whistle.

Angelina Carberry’s version

Angelina plays a lovely version of this tune on her album "An Tradisiun Beo". Here’s my rough transcription of it.

A,2EA, G,B,DG|FDD2 ADFD|EDCA, G,B,DG|FDAD BDAD|

I personally prefer Angelina’s version particular with the C natural in part 2.

I might add, that it’s not easy to pick up by ear. There’s a lot of twists in it but I got most of it. Just needed the sheet music to sort out 1 or 2 bars. It’s definitely a good one for training your ear though!

It does need a few adjustments…
