Maurice o’keefe’s no. 1

This is the first polka - of 3 - in the set from Patrick Street ‘Made in Cork’ (track 5), I’ll post the third polka too.
I don’t know if it’s the right name, but because it’s the first polka in the set, so………….

The Blue Ribbon

Thanks for hauling this one in, ceili.:-)

I know this tune as "The Blue Ribbon" from a Johnny O’Leary recording, except that in this submission the A and B parts have been reversed. It’s the second tune of Track 15 from the 1995 Craft recording "Johnny O’Leary of Sliabh Luachra." On the recording, he plays it in D. I’ve heard it called "Blue Ribbon" among contradance players in the USA, and the parts are played in the same order that O’Leary played them too.

In G, I’d play it something like this on my concertina:

Polka!!!

I wrote that I would send the third polka in the set from P.S. It’s called Sonny Reardon’s, but it was submitted by another as The Orange. You can find the P.S. version under ‘comments’ at The Orange ‘site’.

# Posted on July 5th 2012 by ceolachan

Fortunately it’s already on site…

Sorry about the abc! I think I’ve added the 16th bar to the B part now. Source??? Unsure. No really I’ve no idea where it came from. Sorry if it is already on here but I did try searching the database, but it told me there were no matches.

& closing comments, Keithypete first ~ :-D

Is it here already or not? If not that’s good - isn’t it? Crappy abc transcription notwithstanding.

# Posted on July 6th 2012 by Keithypete.

No! Crappy ABC transcriptions are not good for anyone… Yours however, once cleaned up, ain’t so bad. But, deep sigh, the tune is already here. Crazy though, as any search I tried repeatedly by title and tune category was coming up blank. So, I’ve added a bit more in the alternate titles and hopefully in the future ~ … Not having a hand on ABC notation won’t help you find anything that way… In future if you’re unsure you can always ask folks here for help, or raise it in ‘discussion’…

Q: 126 bpm (1 beat = one crotchet/quarter note)

I have also learned this one direct as well from other living sources and situations where the average tempos varied from 120 to 136 bpm (& higher :-P) ~ 1 beat = one crotchet/quarter note…
