Counting The Coppers

Composed by Paddy O’Donoghue. The version I’ve posted here is based on the one from Maeve Donnelly’s album, but transposed from A into the original key of D. This has been played in my session for quite a while now, and it was at the session where I first learnt the tune.

The original setting from Paddy O’Donoghue’s book of compositions, however, is slightly different (I’ve added in rolls):

I learnt this tune at my local session, and so the setting I’ve been playing is different again:

There are only two other tunes of Paddy’s in the session database at the time of writing, both posted exactly 2 years ago by Kenny:

Good one Dow. I’d thought of posting this after hearing Maeve Donnelly play it at a Willie Clancy fiddle concert a few years ago, but I could have sworn it had 3 parts. I’ll go back and listen to it again.

You might be thinking of her 3-part version of the Flax In Bloom, which is the first tune in her Counting The Coppers set.

2 parts

No, I knew about that - I was just wrong. 2 parts it is. Will try it before Canberra. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Thanx for the name! I play that for a long time without knowin how it’s called, and had no idea of the composer. I picked it from a session with Brid Harper. It’s a nice tune, but guitarists don’t like it. lol
