Got this from the playing of Jerry O’Sullivan’s "O’Sullivan Meets O’Farrell. I did leave out most of the ornamentation, but it’s best to do something with the long d’s in the B part.

Lady Harriet Hope

Published as "Lady Hariot Hope’s Reel" in Joshua Cambell’s 2nd Collection (Edinburgh, c1800), and in the usual Kerr’s Merry Melodies and Skye Collection anthologies too. Usually in the key of F, but I’ll transpose it for comparison:

Lady Harriet Hope

That last line doesn’t belong - it was left over from Paddy’s submission. Sorry.

By the way, there is another unrelated reel of the same name composed by Robert Macintosh.

Nigel, don’t forget to give it to us in F also…

You’ll read elsewhere that:

[Lady Harriet/Harriot Hope has been identified (by Jerry O’Sullivan & Brian McCandless) as Lady Henrietta Johnstone (1682-1750), married to the Charles Hope (1681-1742), 1st Earl of Hopetoun in 1699. ]

I’m not totally convinced. The family is very likely, but "Lady Henrietta Johnstone" also had a daughter who was a "Lady Henrietta Hope" (1706-1745, later becoming Lady Henrietta Napier) , and a granddaughter with the same name (c.1750–1786). The latter (who would have been known under the title even as a child) was known for her religious exploits. All would likely have been called Harriet.

The earliest known publications of the tune (c 1759) could tally with any one of the three, and there is nothing to confirm the dedication.
