Memories of Ballymote

This is one of those rare polkas that doesn't come from Munster (particularly Sliabh Luachra) and originated in the Sligo/Leitrim area. It's also known as Church Street and is normally followed by Gurteen Cross (St. Mary's) which I'll submit in a day or two.

Nice One

Nice one, Bannerman. For those who are unfamiliar with the Sligo/Leitrim style, the polkas are played at a steady pace as opposed to the breakneck speed favoured by some Sliabh Luachra players. This tune appears on the recent(ish) album by Ben Lennon & Friends entitled "The natural Bridge". I would recommend this album to anyone who has an interest in the Sligo/Leitrim style or in fact to anyone who has an interest in Irish traditional Music.
BTW Ben plays d>e dB in bar 5 of the second part although d>e dc works just as well.

Memories of Ballymote (polka)

I'll go along with Miles's comments about Ben Lennon's "The Natural Bridge". The tracks were recorded live in Meehan's, The Cosy Corner Bar, Kiltyclogher, Co. Leitrim, except for tracks 1 and 3 recorded in studios, and track 16 recorded in a concert at Ballagh Hall, Rossinver. Consequently, you're getting something that's very close to a dam' good pub session (which is what it's all supposed to be about, after all) instead of the somewhat artificial sound and all-too-perfect performances of so many commercial studio recordings. I'd also recommend Ben's "Dog Big and Dog Little" cd, which is in effect a companion to "The Natural Bridge".

Last year I had the pleasure of seeing Ben play at a gig in The Duke of Cambridge (Bristol), accompanied extremely well by a young Bristol guitarist whom he had met for the first time only that day, and then later on in the evening they were joined by a Bristol fiddler who is one of Ben's advanced workshop pupils. Ben played several tunes that are on his cd's mentioned here, including this polka. The audience couldn't have been better - about 70 crammed into a small pub (ticket only on this occasion) - not a sound or clink of a glass while the music was playing, and then the most appreciative applause at the end. The evening finished with a session that went on into the late-ish early hours of the next day.

Memories of Ballymote (Church Street) - polka

I've found this polka is an excellent follow-on to The Green Cottage polka.
