Kevin Burke

I have a setting of this tune as played by Kevin Burke if anyone is interested, it is quite different to the standard version
Good Luck

Mikea, please post it. I'm curious to see how it matches up to what I do.

The version I learned sits better on fiddle, but fair warning--most flute players won't like you for it. The A part is in E dorian, but the B and C parts shift into E mix, with G sharps. Goes like this:

Shame

What a shame this had to be lifted straight from Norbeck's database, typos and all. Even the mode has been changed from the original transcription, which was in Amix, so that now it sort of works but would need a couple of tweaks to make it sound really nice. Good job we still have the likes of Will and GM around to put in the effort towards new transcriptions of recorded material. Thanks. And now I'll reluctantly step down from my anti-plagiarism soapbox and post my setting.

. . . down in South London, Brian Young (penny whistle, piano backing & electric bass) plays a great solid version of this tune . . .

Sean sa Cheo

Marcas O'Murchu attributes this reel to Mayo fiddler John McGrath, who spent most of his life in N.Y. It seems he also wrote Providence.

Sean sa cheo

Seab Sa Cheo

Great tune this which I've also heard attributed to Neillidh Boyle.

Donegal version?

I was just listening to Chieftains 8, and there they play a four-part version of Sean sa Cheo, and say in the liner notes that it derives from the Donegal version of Johnny Doherty. I've only ever heard this tune with three parts. Does anyone know anything more about this fourth part?

Sean sa cheo

I'm not sure we're on the same page, but...

The tune played by John Doherty, and which he called "Lough Isle Castle," is his version of a great Scottish fiddle tune called "The Reel of Tulloch" (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/7033). According to Danny O'Donnell* that tune is "closely related to "Sean sa Cheo", a Donegal tune believed to have been composed by Neili Boyle."

However, "Sean sa Cheo" on the Chieftains 8 doesn't appear to have much relation to "Lough Isle Castle".

*= sleeve notes for 'John Doherty, Taisce - The Celebrated Recordings (1978)
