John "Watt" Henry's
From a recording of Noel Hill and Tony Linnane at Glasgow Folk Festival 1984. They followed this with a tune called "Handsome Sally" - a cousin of "Drowsy Maggie", which I'll post soon. Matt Molloy has recorded these two fine reels on his "Stony Steps" album. The two tunes are often played together, especially by Sligo musicians.

Another
Hello,
On the Fire Aflame record (Molloy, Keane and O'Flynn) there's another John "Watt" Henry, except he's Johnny there. Totally different tune from this one, played by Matt Molloy on a Bb Flute, one of the better tracks of the album i think, followed by Jerry McMahon's reel. Now, who is Mr Henry? and does anyone know this other reel?

John "Watt" Henry
John "Watt" Henry is/was [?] a fiddle player ,I think from a place called Doocastle in Co.Sligo. I don't know if he's still alive or not, if he is, he'd be in his 70s or possibly even his 80s by now. His name is associated with several tunes, including, strangely, a reel from the Shetland islands whose original title is "Donald Blue". His brother is the great Sligo-style flute-player Kevin Henry, a stalwart of the Chicago music scene. Kevin has a CD called "One's Own Place", and he duets with his brother on that recording, in fact I seem to remember that John "Watt" has one solo fiddle track on it as well.
I agree with you, it's a fine reel. I'll try to post it if no-one else does, but I can't check "abcs" at the moment becauase my computer at home has crashed.

Thanks for that. I was just listening again to this on stony steps and in that first phrase instead of going up to the d he plays a C natural. It gives the tune an entirely different feel. Interesting.
