Carmel Mahoney Mulhaire
This tune was composed by accordion player, Martain Mulhaire, for his wife, Carmel Mahoney in the 1950s. If you want to hear what he originally had in mind, listen to him playing it on a recording he did with Seamus Connolly and Jack Coen called, "Warming Up." Besides being in a different key, (Gmaj) the third part is quite different. Iv'e also heard a 3-part version of this tune that's in Dmaj, but has some notable differences as well.

Not to pick a bone but it's Maloney not Mahoney. Both names come from Moal Dhomhnaigh, but it takes a Maloney to tell the Moloney's from the Mahoney's.

Mahoney
Martin Mulhaire's wife's name is Carmel Mahoney, not Maloney - fact. Martin Mulhaire actually plays it [on "Warming Up"] - and presumably composed it - in the key of C, although it's more commonly played in D. The tune has been around for a while and been through the "folk process", so that there are many versions going around. This is my version on whistle, which does vary from some other versions. I first heard this recorded by Cathal McConnell on an LP he made with Robin Morton called "The Irish Jubilee". He called it "Brereton's" and I think only had the first 3 parts. Sean Maguire also recorded it - as cos says - and that was the first I'd heard it referred to as "Mahoney's". I recommend Breda Smyth's version on her "Basil & Thyme" recording. A beautiful piece of playing, which is fully transcribed in Grey Larsen's new flute & whistle tutor.

Carmel O'Mahoney Mulhaire
Carmel and Martin are good friends of mine - this tune was first called "Carmel O'Mahoney's," as Martin wrote it prior to their marriage. "Mulhaire" was added after the fact, obviously. He does, indeed, play it as you hear it on "Warming Up." Martin has composed some 25+ tunes - great ones - which, unfortunately are rarely credited to him. He does not read or write music, so his brother, Brendan, in Galway transcribes them from a tape. The names have been changed so often, that he's in the process of trying to track down the recordings with incorrect tune names and ask the artsts to correct them on the next release or "printing."

If he originnally called it "Carmel O'Mahoney's"...
and he's tracking down the recordings with incorrect titles, why did he allow it to be incorrectly titled, "Carmel Mahoney Mulhaire" (and without the "O'") on a recording he himself played it on?
And, BTW, I was wrong about it being in G originally... I meant C, as Kenny points out.

Also recorded by.......
Also recorded by Dermot Byrne, as "Mulhaire's", but I'm not including it as an alternative title as there is already a different reel of that name in the database. It can also be found on whistle-player Tom McHaile's recording where it is called "Cooley's # 3". That's the only instance I know of using that name, so it also has been excluded.

Jed Murphy sent me the dots for his transcription of this tune, as recorded by Sean Maguire, so I could post the abcs here and share Jed's work and Sean Maguire's (RIP) art.
