I originally learned this tune in A but I've transcribed it here in the more popular key of G. Still, don't be surprised at sessions if someone starts playing this tune a whole tone higher than you. In the key of A, this tune has an even brighter, up-beat sound.

Tune type

I believe this is actually a single-jig or slide.

Slip Jig

No, I'm pretty sure it's a slip jig. I can't see how it could be played in anything other than 9/8 time.

# Posted on March 20th 2004 by Jeremy

It's a hop jig.

Does anyone know

are there any words to it?

I also know it in A, it does sound brighter.

Alternative name ?

God I'm sick of these tunes in the same time sig with the same name !! It's different if it's a Paddy Fahy's or Ed Reavy's, named after the composer. I mean there are so many it don't matter.

Hasn't someone got a ' The Ballykissangel' or "James Sharkey's" et al for this one ?

The Dusty Miller

The tune is a slip jig 9/8 sig: and is from O'Neill's 1001 gems of Dance Music of Ireland. It's a nice tune to play in G then lift it to A. It is also an excellent tune to play for a dancer dancing a 'Slip Jig' . Somehow they seem to relate to it.

3rd part?

Where's the third part I've heard so many times? The Comhaltas members who have heard me play it say it's rather pretty...

# Posted on July 22nd 2007 by vonnieestes

You play a 3rd part, well, where is it, and where did you get it?? For the umpteenth time I've gone searching for a third part in collections, 3/2, 9/8 ~ and even 6/8, and all are just two parts in total, not one showed a 3rd part. So, you've had my interest and it is holding, let's see your third part, with something about its origins... I'd love to give it a try, or any other 3rd part someone might have out there? :-/

The ONeill collections and Bremner's Collections of 1757 ~ just 2 parts...
However, more to follow ~ ;-)

No, I as yet haven't found a clue as to where I got that particular 3rd part. What's given was pulled out of memory. I haven't yet gone fishing through my own notes... :-/

Does this bear any resemblance to what you know and play Vonnie? ~ or anyone else?

# Posted on July 22nd 2007 by ceolachan

Always knew it as a 3 parter

I don't remember where I first heard this tune at least 30 years ago, but it always had the three parts as far as I can remember. It probably is quite the same as your abc version in G. Years ago I took a copy for my "little black book" (actually a tome) that's listed as #60 from JC's Tunefinder. If you can't find it there e-mail me again and maybe I can send you the dots.

# Posted on July 25th 2007 by vonnieestes

Ps

Actually I just peeked over at JC's and found it as version #160 submitted by marlboro college's mahoney as an RR tune. Does that mean Richard Robinson's version in computereez? Anyway, that's the version I have saved in my notebook.
