I first heard this tune last summer, played by Connie Connell and Gerry Harrington at a session in Pepper's, Feakle, and was teased by its meanders. I heard it again at my local session a couple of months ago, played by a piper, Paul Brennan. He referred me to O'Neill's, so the version I have is learned from there. Not having any recordings of it, and not wanting to post a duplicate of a printed setting here, I put in a request for it around Christmas time, but nobody responded. I couldn't hold it in any longer, so here it is. I have played it a few times in sessions now (although I have not heard anyone else play it since Paul Brennan), and I think I am beginning to get beyond the stage of simply replicating the notes in the book. So the setting you see here has a little of me in it.

A search on it revealed that it has been recorded by Joe Ryan (I shall have to seek it out). It is criminal that it wasn't here already.

Fix before the sheet music gets done ...

You might want to double-check the abc -- looks like you may have "b" where you meant "B". Check third strain, second measure, you have a triplet notated: "(3bcd" which I'm guessing you meant as "(3Bcd". Am I right?

Thanks, FyfferGuy. It looks like Jeremy has corrected it, as the sheet music's right.

Kit O'Mahony was Francis O'Neill's mother. Joe Ryan and Eddie Clarke recorded this tune on their duet LP Crossroads. It's also in O'Neill's in a hornpipe setting, and was recorded in that style by Patrick Ourceau and Gearoid O hAllmhurain.

Hornpipe Setting

Patrick taught me his hornpipe setting of this tune a few years back. I've listed it in the comments of the album 'Tracin', recorded with Gearóid Ó HAllmhuráin.

It is aslo # 1593 in O'Neill's 1850.

Druid's Field?

I see that the hornpipe version sometimes goes by the name "Druid's Field." Does this jig version ever go by that title?

Kit O'Mahoney's - A Different Key

Another take on this great tune by Bronwyn Power from Clare who plays it in the in the key of "C" rather than "G". It's on the Comhaltas site over at http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhaltaslive_229_2_bronwyn_de_paor/
