My first contribution =)

Here's my first contribution. I hope the abc file will play (^-^;

It's a Québécois reel that would translate in english by "Sugaring Reel". A notable performance is by fiddler Isidore Soucy in 1938, and I think he wrote the tune too.

Mistake in the ABC

Last line should read :

|: A2 A<B A2G2 | F2F2 F2A2 | d2f2 a2g2 | f2d2 c2d2 |
e2f2 g<ag<f | g2e2 e2e2 | g2g1/2a3/4g3/4 fg1/2f3/4ed3/4 | c2c2 B2c2 |[1d2FG |[2 dxff :|

(There's an extra bar at the end)

I put the fixes in

|: A2 A<B A2G2 | F2F2 F2A2 | d2f2 a2g2 | f2d2 c2d2 |
e2f2 g<ag<f | g2e2 e2e2 | g2g1/2a3/4g3/4 fg1/2f3/4ed3/4 | c2c2 B2c2 |[1d2FG |[2 dzff :|

I wonder if that will work...

If your edits don't appear in the sheet music, then just accept it as the modern folk tradition at work. In future the wrong version will be performed at sessions all over the world, and will be accepted as the definitive version! Personally, I find its the only way I can make my own mark on the music!
On the topic of the tune.. what speed does it go at. I wouldn't want to play it at the mdid speed on this site and make another contribution to the oral tradition.
Cheers

Yeah I know, I was told that the sheetmusic nor the midi won't get updated. Too bad. I could even make them myself. (Five Line Skink rules!)

For the speed, follow the link I put in my first post. On the page there's a link to a free mp3 of it by Isidore Soucy. (I've been listening to it all the time these last days hehehe.)

Not to be confused with...

Hi, Yuki...
"Reel des Sucres" is a title also applied to the two jigs comprising what some of us in the USA know as "Portland Fancy". Thanks for the post of this particular version.
I also have enjoyed some great stuff (streaming RA) on the Virtual Gramophone site. Too bad they don't have any Carignan on there to date.

Carignan...

As far as I know, he never made any gramophone recordings, hence, none of his recordings will find there way onto that public domain site.

Alan Mills and Jean Carignan
Songs, Fiddle Tunes and a Folk-Tale from Canada
Folkways Records FG 3532, 1966.

Should be available through the Smithsonian/Folkways website.

P.S. Amazon.com has two titles available, a single CD for $8 and a three CD set for $85.

Fixed transcript

When I heard my aunt playing the tune, I noticed she uses a different key, and I thought she was mistaken, but I have transcripted the tune once again from the Virtual Gramophone, and it looks like I was the one being mistaken. It sounds nice in D, but the original version is in B.

Reel de Normandin

Here's another version of this reel, known as Reel de Normandin (from the playing of Tommy Duchesne on the Virtual Gramophone).

Some more fixes (I updated the ABC):

Plus, nevermind about the Bmaj. It's in Dmaj. The instrument I was using to transcribe that time was badly tuned.
