I just checked this out from the link on the Australian tunes thread. But I'm curious to know where the composer got the name. Is Mr. Waters a biologist by trade?
Signal transduction is a phenomenon exhibited by many cells, whereby they receive signals from the environment (maybe in the form of molecules or ions) and respond in some way, possibly by upregulating some genome-encoded protein. Here's a wee primer:

True, ceolachan, when you join in and play a tune with another player I guess that's signal transduction on a macro scale. And possibly even at a neuronal level. Who knows what proteins are being upregulated when you learn a new set of tunes
(I don't, that's for sure!)
