Help with Song Lyrics

Help with Song Lyrics

When I was younger, my mother used to sing a song to me (her mother sang it to her also) I don’t know the name but it has some thing to do with a child writing a letter to the President asking him not to let her father go to war. It’s not an Irish Trad song but I have been trying to get hold of it for some time.

It Starts…

“ Dear Mr. President dont let my daddy go, Dear Mr President I love my daddy so….”

It also possibly mentions her friend Jim whos father went to the war and never returned.

Thats all I know of it and I also know the air. If any one could please help me get the lyrics and where it has originated from I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

Sarfly,

Don’t know the song but it sounds like a good ‘un. As a Yank I’d be especially interested in learning it. Do you know enough of abc to write out the melody? That might help with the search. I put the lyrics into google (which you’ve probably already done) and haven’t found anything yet.

By the way, MY mother used to sing us this song:

“Glorious! Glorious!
One keg of beer for the four of us.
Glory be to God that there are no more of us,
For one of us could drink it all alone.”

No idea where it came from.

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

Ha now thats a song ill be singing while out tonight! Ya Ill give it a try when I’m at home on the piano later if I get time, theres a few sharps and flats Id say in it.

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

“ Johnny don’t be a hero… don’t be a fool with your life”

A 70s favorite..

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

Sorry lamh, thats Billy not Johnny…. This song has something to do with the father going to the war in Vietnam and shes writing a letter to the President asking him not to let her father go. Its a real slow air to it.

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

I was never good with names..

Was it Bomb Iran or Barbra Ann ?

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

Fidkid, I bet you already knew this, but the original of your Mother’s (WWI) song went “One respirator for the four of us…”
(i.e. gas mask). Cheery Stuff…

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

You’re joking, right IB?

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

Ruining a childhood memory?
But you have two songs now for the price of one!
“Drunk last night, and drunk the night before…”
Your Mother must have been a character to sing you that one.

And I want it on record that I never started the First World War. I was never in Sarajevo in 1914, AND I HAVE DOCUMENTS TO PROVE IT!

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

Hi I also used to sing this as a child. Don’t know where I picked it up. I live in Ireland. These are the words I remember. I’ve also been trying to find the rest of this song for about 20 years on and off. It’s got a beautiful sweet melody
Chorus
Dear Mr. President, I love my Daddy so
Dear Mr. President, don’t let my Daddy go
Now why can’t men be always friends like me and Jim and Sam
Oh please don’t let my Daddy go to the war in Vietnam

Verse

Now Little Jim who lives next door has no Daddy anymore
His Momma says it’s all because they sent him out to war.
Now Little Jim just cries and cries because he doesn’t understand
Oh please don’t let my Daddy go to th war in Vietnam

Re: Help with Song Lyrics

Yes it’s a beautiful song. My dad still sings it! Here are the words:
A little girl with golden curls sat down to write one day, a letter to the president of the great big USA, her daddy was called upon to fight in Vietnam, and this is what she wrote to him with her tiny little hand..
Chorus
