flute teachers in Clare

flute teachers in Clare

Could you recommend any flute teacher in County Clare, preferrably in Ennis or around there?

Re: flute teachers in Clare

When I was living in Clare, a close friend raved about Kevin Ryan as a teacher. He took lessons from him a few years ago. Not sure if Kevin’s still around and still gives lessons. Ask around in Ennis. He used to play there on a regular basis. He’s a mighty flute player and a very nice lad.

I believe Brid O’Donoghue is still giving flute/whistle lessons in Miltown. Although they may be group lessons and most of her students are children. She’s a wonderful player and I loved hearing her play at a weekly session in Miltown.

I was told I should take lessons from Gary Shannon and that he’s an amazing teacher. His style is more modern from the recordings I’ve heard so I didn’t follow this advice. Perhaps I should have…..He lives somewhere in Clare.

If you run into the Green sisters , ask them. Carmel and a nice group of ladies take lessons from man somewhere near Lisdoonvara. I’ve heard nice things about this flute teacher who plays in the old style. I wish I had joined the group on Tuesday nights….

Good luck!

Re: flute teachers in Clare

id recommend garry shannon too. went to him myself and hes a great teacher. he’ll show you how to do everything and its up to you to use whatever techniques you want in your style. he lives in ruan which is roughly 15mins outside ennis and i think he played in cruises often enough but im not sure if plays there anymore. he shouldn’t be hard to get hold of if you ask around.
hope that helps!

Check out Eamon Cotter. He´s from Kilmaley, not too far from Ennis, although I don´t know if he still lives there.

Re: flute teachers in Clare

Custy’s music shop in Ennis would also be a good place to make enquiries as they seem to have information on most things trad in Clare. Eamonn Cotter who lives in Kilmaley (a few miles from Ennis) would also be an excellent teacher.

Re: flute teachers in Clare

I’d back up the Kevin Ryan recomendation. I had some lessons from him when i was living in Ennis and he was incredibly helpful both in technique and approach to the music, and helping me get my head around what *i* was actually aiming for as a player (never an easy thing!)

And that’s ignoring the fact that he’s one of the tastiest players in the scene, I couldn’t rave about him enough…

Re: flute teachers in Clare

I forgot about Eamonn Cotter. I didn’t see him on the scene in Ennis when I was living there recently, but I used to see him at festivals when I was just traveling to Ireland in past years. In fact I had him for a weekend class up in Louisburgh. Myself and another woman were the only adults but it was an enjoyable class and I recorded some lovely tunes. He passed out a lot of sheet music and I remember he would write the tunes up on the board in a sort of ABC style. I learn by ear and don’t read music too well so it was interesting for me. All in all it was fun taking the class with Eamonn. He’s a lovely man and great flute player. I tried on of his keyless flutes that he made and it was A-1!

Cheers

Thanks everyone for the recommendations 🙂

Re: flute teachers in Clare

Check out Caitriona Moloney. She teaches flute in Ennis. She teaches everything by ear and teaches you how to read the music also which is very handy.
She teaches at a music school in Ennis called Clare Music Makers. You can google them
