Fiddle fingering - height from fingerboard

Fiddle fingering - height from fingerboard

With respect to the *best* height for the fingers above the fingerboard, I was wondering what advice other players may have regarding this. Personally, I find that to get crisp, clean grace notes (rather than rolls), I find I have to keep my fingers well off the fingerboard. It’s been suggested to me, by a good player, that I should try to minimise the height of my fingers above the fingerboard - but when I try to do so, my grace notes become less articulate. Has anyone any suggestions/comments regarding this?

Why not lift low for the regular notes, but lift high before swinging down for a grace note?

I prefer lower - for accuracy and speed but sometimes I lift higher - usually when I want to attack a particular note. If it helps you articulate ornaments, then it works for you and there’s nothing wrong with it
