The beautiful market town of Biggar, South Lanarkshire will host the second Biggar Spring Gaitherin on the 24th to 26th May 2007. A host of some of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians will grace the town for a weekend of concerts, workshops, music fair and taster workshops. The weekend kicks off with Dumfriesshire born singer Emily Smith at Clydesdale folk Club in the Elphinstone Hotel, on Friday night there is a fanastic concert with acknowledged concertina virtuoso, Simon Thoumire and Deaf Shepherd’s fiddler Clare McLaughlin, they will also be joined with Harris Playfair, the Shetlander famous for being an outrageously talented pianist.
Saturday gives people the opportunity to take part in some musical activities. There are Workshops for Adults and Children in Elphinstone Hotel from 9.30am, these workshops include 5 hours of tuition in Fiddle with BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician Shona Mooney; Scots Song with Mairi Campbell; Guitar with Dave Francis and Ensemble with Harris Playfair. There is also the opportunity to try your hand at trying something new at the Music Fair and Taster Sessions in the Municipal Hall from 12-5pm.
And to finish the weekend off there will be a Gala Concert in the Municipal Hall at 7,30pm featuring the Shona Mooney Band who are fast becoming one of Scotland’s top young folk bands and The Cast featuring Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis.
The weekend is the organised by Hands up for Trad and South Lanarkshire Council.
