Rehosted and reposted: Critique my playing

Hey All,
Last week I put up some recordings of my playing so people could have a listen and give me some pointers and after some helpful advice from a few people, the hosting stopped working. DubChieftain kindly suggested an alternate site, at which I’ve now hosted them.

This first is Dr. Gilbert’s followed by the Moving Cloud:

The second is a Gan Ainm jig (if anyone knows the name that would be awesome) followed by two more jigs Tar Road to Sligo/Spot the Wallop:

The third is two Fmaj reels from Josephine Marsh’s album, the second Phyllis’ Birthday she wrote:

So if you have any comments about my playing style, ornamentation, rhythm, phrasing, set composition, or anything else that would be really helpful.

Hmm, they don’t seem to work all that well in the browser, you might need to save them to disk to listen to them properly. Also, apologies for the terrible recording quality, I don’t have any better option.

Re: Rehosted and reposted: Critique my playing

I don’t think you’ve got much to worry about.

Re: Rehosted and reposted: Critique my playing

Except that in sessions you’ll have to play faster, as a rule, to fit in.

Re: Rehosted and reposted: Critique my playing

Yeah, I usually would play faster, depending on who’s at the session although I’m quite sure my playing deteriorates exponentially as I try and play faster. ;)

Re: Rehosted and reposted: Critique my playing

Being able to play fast is, IMO, a matter of time rather than forced effort.

One day, months or years down the line, you may well find yourself playing fast (and getting the rhythm etc. right as well) in a way that would surprise you now.

Re: Rehosted and reposted: Critique my playing

You’re accenting in the right places but for my ear you’re giving the accents far too much wallop. A bit like a lot of young fiddlers I hear who’ve just discovered the backbeat and emphasise it so much that that’s all you can hear.

I always think that singing or lilting a tune is a good reality check. Try to imagine someone lilting with those whopping big accents you are giving - I think you’d find the results would be a tad absurd.

Re: Rehosted and reposted: Critique my playing

i love the tune Dr Gilberts.

ive nearly memorised it on the banjo, i might post an mp3 soon.

i like recordings of traditional stuff played slow.
makes a nice change.

i think youve got to play at whatever speed your "feeling" a tune at.
any faster and it will sound awkward. IMO

(lightningmp3 works well with browsers if quicktime and firefox are installed)
