Clare concertina re-releases on Free Reed

Clare concertina re-releases on Free Reed

The UK company Free Reed has just announced a large number of re-releases, some of which (if not all) would be of interest to session folks.

There are six CDs of recordings from the 70s of the Clare style of concertina, which are available individually or at a discount as a boxed set

as well as some other stuff by Micho Russell, Alisdair Anderson, et al., and one intriguingly titled "Ballads and songs of the north of Ireland"

I’ve bought a couple of their box sets in the past and have been very pleased with the production, particularly in terms of the notes that accompany the CDs. These guys are clearly true enthusiasts, and worth supporting.

Eno (not related in any way with Free Reed, apart from being a satisfied customer 🙂 )

Where did you see the information about ‘Ballads and songs of the north of Ireland’, please? I’ve checked the website and can’t find it.

HALELLUJAH!!! ~

Superb, highly recommended, and while I have the LPs, if not at hand, this set is on my wish list ~ birthday or Christmas or earlier? My fingers are crossed. It is good to see these excellent recordings available again for others to enjoy and be inspired by as I have, great characters, great music, wonderful… 🙂

Re: Clare concertina re-releases on Free Reed

It’s a monumental collection but ‘definitive’? That would be unfair to all the great players that weren’t included.

Now these guys all had "soul" in their music.

Re: Clare concertina re-releases on Free Reed

in addition to this batch, word is that a collection of paddy murphy’s playing is due in the fall….

Re: Clare concertina re-releases on Free Reed

I will be at the Eigse Mrs Crotty in Kilrush next week and will ask Neil Wayne about those Paddy Murphy recordings. There is hardly any of his playing recorded, but Neil is the man who would know.
Anyone from here going to Kilrush ? Look in at Buggles bar if you´re there.

~ that was a cut and paste from ‘free-reed’ kilfarboy, I should have been more ‘careful. You are of course correct, however good, nothing is ‘definitive’ or can be complete… Even with those recorded, like Chris Droney, no single recording can cover the man’s history, or what he is ‘live’ with a group of dancers before him… 😉

Re: Clare concertina re-releases on Free Reed

There’s a bit of Paddy Murphy recordings around, if you look. I think it’s Peadar O loughlin that’s behind that one. Maybe it’s time he releases the Tommy Potts project, that’s been done for years.
AND I know about the Bobby Casey one, the sleeve for which is being finalised, but that’s from a different source. So there, much to look forward to.

I may stop over in Kilrush on the saturday, on the way back from the Bantry thing with more free and other reeds.

Good things come to those who wait? ~ 🙂

Re: Clare concertina re-releases on Free Reed

I was chuffed to hear the additional good news about the ‘field recordings’ of Paddy Murphy, another fine musician and a favourite. That will have to be for Christmas, since it is due out in November…as read on the above link, and this from the same, the source for that future release ~

Re: Clare concertina re-releases on Free Reed

now, if we could only hear re-release announcements for lucy farr’s "heart and home" and sean (fiddle) ryan’s "back home to the cliffs of mohir"….

Re: Clare concertina re-releases on Free Reed

sheesh, look at the main friday evening lineup at bantry—-paddy o’brien is my favorite b/c box player, very much a role model, and the other reeds are nifty as well……

Lyric FM will broadcast all concert at the Masters of Tradition in Bantry at a later date, if that is any help. Didn’t you see ‘the other reeds’ in Feakle last year, somehow seem to remember seeing you roaming the street after the concert.
