I agree. I have their album The Legacy. Superb.

Re: The Thatch Ceili Band

Was it on Siar an Bóthar? If so, I saw the program before. They are just fantastic. I love Mick O’Connor’s playing!

Re: The Thatch Ceili Band

I remember the Thatch Ceili Band ( I seem to remember them winning a competion at the Fleadh Ceol around the time that they were at their peak) They certainly were a good tight band. I’d imagine that they probably took their name from ‘The Thatch’ club at Highbury Corner, London. They use to play in it. I think that Mickey Whelan the drummer, was part of the ownership of the club. I remember Mickey from playing in the London pubs in the sixties. As well as been a tasty drummer, Mickey was also a fine two row box player in his own right. Sadly I was told that he passed away sometime in the eighties.

Free Reed
you are spot on the Thatch band was formed by
John Bowe and named after the club at Highbury
Corner.I think the band won 2 All-Irelands.
You will be glad to hear Mick Whelan is alive and
well,I think he lives in Killarney.

Re: The Thatch Ceili Band

I think they won the titles in 1986 and 1987 or thereabouts.

Re: The Thatch Ceili Band

Goose - Thanks for that bit of good news. I’m afraid it’s the old story. If somebody dissapears of the scene for a while, the rumour goes round that they are dead. Not true in this case.
