O’Neill’s abc collections

O’Neill’s abc collections

I have put up a mirror for the O’Neill’s abc tune collection projects. This includes three books so far, O’Neill’s Music of Ireland (1850 tunes), O’Neill’s Dance Music of Ireland (1001 tunes) and O’Neill’s Waifs and Strays of Irish Melody (343 tunes). These three collections were put together by other dedicated people, not by me. I’m providing a home for them for those who are interested. They can also be found on John Chambers site.

Re: O’Neill’s abc collections

Thank you!! I almost didn’t go to look because of the "abc" reference in your discussion title. To my surprise these sites contain sheet music. Very much appreciated by those of us who still read the dots.

Re: O’Neill’s abc collections

Just reporting a conflict between software applications …

The browser I generally use is Opera 9.50. If I try to look at the dots in the above links (by clicking on the main title of tune, and not "abc" or "midi") it turns out that they are pdf files and Adobe 8.1.1 and Opera 9.50 instantly crash. If I use Firefox 2.0.0.11 or Opera 9.23 instead of Opera 9.50 Adobe 8.1.1 works fine, with no problems.

Any suggestions, anyone, other than not using Opera 9.50 (which, btw, is the quickest browser I’ve ever used - and streaming video or audio doesn’t stutter). Earlier versions of Adobe (which might be ok with Opera 9.50) seem to be no longer available.

Re: O’Neill’s abc collections

Sorry I’m a mac geek. Can you save the link as, then open it once it’s downloaded? Inconvenient I know.

Re: O’Neill’s abc collections

Lildogturpy, thanks, that seems to be the only method that works, other than reverting to Firefox. There is a real conflict between the latest version (8.1.1) of Adobe Reader and the Opera browser (including 9.23 as it happens). When I used to use Adobe Reader 7 I didn’t have this conflict with Opera, and I took Adobe’s offer of an upgrade without thinking (moral there - if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it). Unfortunately, the upgrade wrote over Adobe 7, so I couldn’t revert to it, and it no longer seems to be available.

Anyway, I followed your advice, did a test run with the first tune in O’Neill - "’Twas on a Summer Morning", and did Saved Link As to my desktop, where it appeared as tune3737517031062.pdf (didn’t know there were so many tunes!), and Adobe 8 displayed it with no problems.

I think I’ll get back to Adobe on this.

Re: O’Neill’s abc collections

Couldn’t find an obvious way to complain to Adobe (surprise! surprise!), so I’ve fired Adobe Reader and replaced it with Cool PDF Reader which works properly with the O’Neill collections on the Opera browser as a pdf reader should.

And, Lildog, many thanks for putting these invaluable O’Neill links up!
