Re: urgent help required for fleadh tunes and songs

Avoid recent compositions, Rachel - not the Glasgow reel, certainly not the "Lonesome Boatman", and probably not "Michael McGoldrick’s".
Although they are relatively recently-composed, you might be OK with "Dusty Windowsill", "Cat’s Miaow" and "Hammy Hamilton’s". You can’t go wrong with "The Earl’s Chair" , "Dunmore Lasses" or either of the "Copperplates" - any of those reels would do well on flute too.
Is that "Tommy Makem’s" the tune I posted here ? If so, I’m delighted that someone has taken it up and is playing it.
If the "Cobbler" is the song I think it is, best not. I think it was written by Pete Seeger, but it could be a different song altogether.
I’ll have a think about some other suggestions , and get back to you.

Good luck, Rachel! You’re a brave lass to do the fleadh.
What about Mason’s Apron for flute?

Re: urgent help required for fleadh tunes and songs

I would agree with Kenny re Mike McGoldrick compositions. They are not totally accepted. I played them for several years on the whistle, taking my chances, and adjudicators never really went for them. That said, I knew I was taking my chances, and if you play it well and you really like it, I’d say go for it.

"oh me name is dick darby im a cobbler
ive served me time at old camp…etc

sang it two years ago in the fleadh and got to the connaughts on it.

any help though would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
re the masons apron…i find it very difficult to play the standard way on the flute and have been told that my version would not go down well…
yes thinking of playing cats miaow for my whistle jig..nice air, three parts..and i can do some nice variations + ornamentation with it..still stuck on the others though

oh and yes it is the tommy makems that was enteredhere…i LOVE it!!and it sounds incredible when i play it RIGHT on the piano!!

Re: urgent help required for fleadh tunes and songs

I know a different “Cobbler” – don’t know the one you have, Rachel, so can’t advise there, I’m afraid .
I think you’re quite right to steer clear of the “Mason’s Apron”, although Micho Russell’s version would probably be acceptable. ( Sorry, “morning star”  )
Three of “big” songs in English which I’ve always liked would be “The Green Linnet”, “The Bonny Bunch Of Roses” and “The Connerys”. These could also be used as slow airs on either flute or whistle, and you would have the added bonus of being familiar with the words, which would help with the phraseing.

Here are some suggestions :

Jigs on whistle : I think the ones you’ve suggested yourself are OK. “Dusty Windowsill”, “Monaghan” and “Cat’s Miaow” are all good whistle jigs.
One other possibility :

Jigs on flute : Any of the 3 you mentioned would work on flute as well.

Hornpipes on whistle : 2 good whistle hornpipes which I posted are these ones :

Hornpipes on flute : try these :

Reels on whistle :

Reels on flute : as I said above, “Earl’s Chair”, “Copperplate” and “Dunmore Lasses”are all sound choices.
Here’s a couple of lesser-known reels from Harry Bradley and 2 favourites :

Hope that’s of some use. If you’d like recordings of any of them, get in touch and I’ll see what I can do.
Good luck !!!

Re: urgent help required for fleadh tunes and songs

I think the Cobbler referred to above is that great old song that Tommy Maken did where he sang about his "Intwing of an Intwing of an Ighdoe" while sitting on a three legged stool! There is also a fine jig called "The Cobbler" or "Dan the Cobbler" which is on the site at https://thesession.org/tunes/1911. You can also hear it on the Comhaltas site at
http://media.comhaltas.ie/audio/fs2/1-42Cobbler,the.mp3. It’s a lovely jig, particularly the couple of bars in the Turn that stray into the key of "C", and might be worth considering.
