Northern Fiddler

Northern Fiddler

Hi all - I’m selling some stuff, trying to scrape together enough for a decent flute, and looking through my book collection the other day I realised I had a copy of the ‘Northern Fiddler’ book. I seem to recall that this is now out of print (may have been reprinted though for all I know) and might be worth a few bob.

The cover is not in great condition to be honest - crease marks from considerable use over the years - but the inside is fine. Could anyone give me an idea what it might be worth (if anything!).

For luthiers, I also have a copy of Ed. Heron Allen’s Violin Making As It Was And Is dating from the 1970’s complete with dust jacket and all violin plans.

Anyone interested could also pm me with an offer (hope this post doesn’t violate any rules!).

Re: Northern Fiddler

I’d buy a copy of this book. how much would you expect to get for it?

Re: Northern Fiddler

Thanks for the links to the info everyone - wow! I had no idea it was worth that much…

Hi ládársaol and anyone else who’s interested - I think the fairest suggestion is, have a look at the amazon and bookfinder links above, and then if you’re still interested make me a fair offer by pm. Given the cost, I’m happy to provide photos of the cover etc if you want.

Re: Northern Fiddler

The asking prices it’s not necessarily what the book ‘is worth’, I was looking at prices for O‘Neill’s Irish Music a fascinating hobby and prices quoted between Amazon and Bookfinder for the same (1980s) edition varied from £18 to $450, whatever that means in terms of ’worth’. If you’re lucky someone will pay you the high price.

Re: Northern Fiddler

Thanks Kilfarboy - that’s why I suggested a ‘fair offer’ - I’m not out to fleece anyone. In the end the book will only be worth what someone wants to pay for it - my only objective is a contribution of some sort to my new Olwell flute.

Re: Northern Fiddler

I must say I am a bit uneasy with the silly money some of these books are put on the market for but if someone throws the money at you, why not. I spotted one on e-bay for $380 by the way. Madness (but then a gain, I bought it when it was new and like it for the photos)

Re: Northern Fiddler

I will give you Euro 60

Re: Northern Fiddler

I’ll let y’uns in on a little secret. Lots of out-of-print books, including plenty of song and tune books, now have outrageous market value because of collectors and speculators, but some of them can be had in facsimile form through print-on-demand services for a reasonable price – not cheap, but fair, all things considered.

Herself and I have collected lots of ballad books and were frustrated for years in completing a particular set because the rare book market wanted $400 per volume (probably $800 by now). I eventually learned about p-o-d and located a p-o-d company that offered the book. In another case, I had to convince the publisher to allow p-o-d, but that’s not hard, since they can collect a royalty for no work at all.

Re: Northern Fiddler

I believe the Heron Allen is still available… I think I’ll keep hold of my copy of “The Northern Fiddler”, in mint condition, until it’s value rises to over 1,000… 😏

Re: Northern Fiddler

The Arts Council of NI and Blackstaff Press in Belfast tried to have a reprint of the Northern Fiddler 2 years ago but Alan Feldman would not co-operate so it has gone no further. Anyone with any influence or clout here should get on to him as a generation of trad heads are not privvy to this great collection of stories, tunes and photos.

Re: Northern Fiddler

Would like to buy the Edward Heron Allen book.
Send your price to:

Re: Northern Fiddler

Hiiii,

Just wondering if anyone has a copy of the northern fiddler for sale?

Re: Northern Fiddler

You’ll be extremely lucky to find one, Meabh.

However, if you live in Ireland and are a member of your local library, then have a look at www.borrowbooks.ie/. There are several copies available for loan.
