The Last Gaelic Roots?

The Last Gaelic Roots?

So I hear from a fairly reliable source that this will probably be the last Gaelic Roots, mainly due to the expenses of bringing people over the pond. What a shame, and now I’m heartbroken I’ve never made it…anybody else heard anything about this?

Is that the one with Seamus Connely?

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

The very same, Deb.

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

Oh I hope not too. I was sort of of looking into that to this year. I thnk it was in August or the end of July. I was just kind of thinking when I decided to go to Willie Week that hey maybe I could hook up with them after but wasn’t having much luck finding more infromation about it at the time. So I thought well maybe next year. That would be a shame.

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

Sadly, this news is true. There will be no more Gaelic Roots summer schools after this year. There was a big article by Earle Hitchner in last week’s Irish Echo confirming this. The stated reason is not the expense of bringing teachers in from Ireland, Scotland, etc, but rather the onerous and burdensome visa restrictions brought about by ongoing homeland security initiatives. Apparently these restrictions are a hardship not only to Seamus Connolly and his small staff who must process things here, but also to each individual teacher in their own country who must make multiple visits to consular officials to get signoff on their paperwork.

I’m all for homeland security, but I have to tell you that in five years attendance at Gaelic Roots I have seen very few terrorists. And the ones I saw were students carrying loaded bodhrans, not teachers…

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

What a shame! I guess I’m thankful I’ll be going for the first and last time. I hope other US festivals like Irish Arts Week in the Catskills aren’t facing extinction….

I have heard that the very same restrictions will affect all summer schools and concerts that employ musicians and teachers from other countries – not just Scotland and Ireland, but Canada– and the world!

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

The big difference between Gaelic Roots and the other summer schools in America has always been that GR employs a much larger percentage of teachers who are not US-based than the others do (e.g. Catskills, Augusta, etc). At GR, the percentage of non-US teachers is typically greater than 80%, whereas at the others it’s maybe 20%. So GR is hit much harder on this than the other schools are. Hopefully the others will continue on. It’s certainly possible to put on a great summer school even if you’re limited to teachers who reside in the US. But what made Gaelic Roots consistently the best year after year was that it didn’t do that and instead brought most of its teachers over from Ireland. Now I guess we’ll have to go to Willie Week to find that!

America seems to shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted and keeping in a giraffe

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

no. it’s more like the US is shooting the horse so we can seal the stable door permanently.

Gosh, I thought it was our feet we were shooting…

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

A colleague of mine at work has just had to fill in ludicrous quantities of paperwork, and attend an interview at the embassy, in order to go to work in Washington for a few weeks with her parent company, BBC America, of which she is a bona-fide permanent employee. It also cost over a hundred dollars for the visa processing and another payment for the application, which the company paid, so she doesn

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

If we give the Irish teachers airfare to Cuba then they can just row-boat over to Florida with a Coast Gaurd escort. ;o)

Ollie ollie appletree, you can’t tag me!! na-na ne noo-noo!!!

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

Almost forgot, I had mentioned in another thread about some of us meeting sometime around Gaelic Roots to have some tunes. I think it’d be fun for more of us to meet face to face. Either the original post got buried, or nobody wants to be in my company.

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

Well, did you ever shower, Brad? *grin* Wish I was going…

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

Uh oh. Brad, I’m pretty sure you’d find my company tedious & laughable, but if you’d be up for playing a few boring, naff tunes, I’d be honored. I’ll just keep the snacks coming while you & Joyce hammer out the good ones. 🙂

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

I’m not much of a player so don’t worry, just looking at meeting some of you if you’re out here cause I can’t make it to Montana. Look forward to meeting you

“I’m not much of a player so don’t worry” – LOL

Re: The Last Gaelic Roots?

I know, I know… *sigh* Well G5 may also come up, so that might be fun too. So like, 10 days…
