Scottish playing English?

Scottish playing English?

I know you most of you guys are far more interested in ITM, but for those of you who spread your musical net a little further, here’s a question for you.

Do you happen to know any Scottish musicians who play or played Scottish Music on the English Concertina?

Thanks to the trusty Footstompers I’ve managed to put together a list of names, which so far looks like this:

Hamish Bayne,
Norman Chalmers,
Simon Cooper,
David Corner,
John Eaglesham,
Stuart Eydeman,
Jean Graham,
George Haig,
Peter Hall,
Gordon Hotchkiss,
Nigel Jelks,
Tom McDermott,
Iain MacDonald,
Marta McGlynn,
Geordie McIntyre,
Iain MacKintosh,
Brian McNeill,
Mike Penny,
Dave Richardson,
Simon Thoumire,
Erland Voy,
Ann Ward,
Tom Ward,
Frances Wilkins,
Ian Wright.

Would anyone here care to add any names to this list?

Cheers
Dick

P.S. I’m now the proud owner of an early 1900s Wheatstone #22 Treble, & as I plan to play Scottish music on this wee beastie & being a Scot anyway …. I’m curious, ;-)

Re: Scottish playing English?

There were 3 in the "Blue Lamp" in Aberdeen 3 weeks ago when a group of musicians from Co Clare turned up including
Frances Wilkins, mentioned above, who has a good repertoire of Shetland tunes.
Also Tom Martin, and John Leavy - although they play more Irish music.
They were well out-numbered by the Anglos that night though :).
I know most of the players on your list, Dick. I reckon only possibly 2 of them are under the age of 40, which doesn’t really bode well for the future. Several of the Co.Clare visitors would have been in their teens, and were already very competent players.

Re: Scottish playing English?

The folk singer Enoch Kent’s father played the concertina in Glasgow I believe.

Re: Scottish playing English?

Thanks Pat, I’ve written to Enoch via his website to learn more ~ Ta

Thanks for Tom & John, Kenny.
I suppose the English scene in Scotland nowadays could perhaps be compared to the Clare scene back in the 40s or 50s, when no, or very, very few young players were playing Anglos.

I know the Scottish players are far more widely dispersed than were the players in Clare, but who knows, what with the Arran Concertina weekend & all that Reed instrument activity up in Aberdeen these days, maybe the English scene is in the early stages of a revival!

Perhaps you could kick start it, by getting Aberdeen to twin with Kilrush? :-D

Re: Scottish playing English?

Has Scotland a long pre-revival tradition of English concertina playing? How well does the EC suit various types of Scottish music?

Interesting subject.

Re: Scottish playing English?

Hi Nicholas,

Well you only have to listen to the English Concertina playing of Norman Chalmers, in Jock Tamson’s Bairns, to appreciate just how well the instrument suits Scottish Music:

http://www.raretunes.org/performers/jock-tamsons-bairns/

As for the history of this instrument in Scotland, I can’t do any better than refer you to this excellent resource by Stuart Eydmann:

The Life and Times of the Concertina:
the adoption and usage of a novel musical instrument with particular reference to Scotland

Re: Scottish playing English?

I just heard back from Scottish Folk Singer Enoch Kent, in Canada.

Enoch said that his father played an English concertina, in what he called the last of the concertina bands in Glasgow.

His name was Joseph Kent.

Re: Scottish playing English?

Helen Ross is presumably the person in the first query - couldn’t have said whether she plays Anglo or English, though…

Alan Wright plays EC in one or two Edinburgh sessions.

Niall

Re: Scottish playing English?

"…..We bought a concertina for to make the high hilarity Though none of us could play it though we tried our best - and worst We knocked a lot of noise from it if that’s of any consequence We handled it so gently that the bellows it did burst

Well we got a boiled potato for to mend the concertina with When someone hit Maloney with the carcass of a cat ….."

Invitation to a funeral..as sung by Jimmy Crowley

Seeing as there’s so many experts here, can someone explain how you repair a concertina with a potato? :-)

Re: Scottish playing English?

It’s a comic song, not to be taken seriously. I can see how a sausage skin might be useful, but not a boiled potato.
But, back to an earlier reply - if you’re looking for Scots musicians, surely Dave Richardson don’t qualify, being from the North-East ?
OK, I know a Geordie is supposed to be a Scot with his head kicked-in, but I’m not convinced.
Meanwhile, though, more power to your elbow for just promoting the usefulness of the English concertina. Yah !

Re: Scottish playing English?

Aye Johannes I agree with you, Dave’s lived there so long, we all think of him as an honourary Scot nowadays. ;-)

For that matter Ewan MacColl wasn’t born in Scotland either, but he did have Scottish parents … & if that’s good enough to get you onto the Scotland team, it’s good enough to get you onto my wee list! ;-)

Anyway, the way I see it, both men have done a lot to promote Scottish music over the years.

Hey Niall, thanks very much for the names.
Simon Thoumire thought Helen played E.C. so I’m not going to argue with him! :-)

Onwards & upwards ….

Re: Scottish playing English?

Don’t think Ewan MacColl ever actually PLAYED a concertina of any sort - it was Peggy Seeger who was the musician in that family.

Re: Scottish playing English?

That’s fair enough ~ thanks Pete.

Well, his real name was Jimmie Miller anyway & if he had been born in Scotland after all, I’m sure he would have learned to play the Concertina! ;-)

Re: Scottish playing English?

Ptarmigan -

Q. Do you mean:

Players of the English concertina, who live in Scotand,

or

English musicians who play all types of concertinas, and live in Scotland?

Re: Scottish playing English?

Mix, are you saying that you think folk like Hamish Bayne, Wendy Stewart, Simon Thoumire, Stuart Eydmann, Pete Heywood, Brian McNeill, Archie Fisher, Iain MacKintosh & Roy Williamson might actually be ENGLISH? :-D

Take another look at the list & I think you’ll be able to answer your own question! ;-)

Cheers
Dick

Re: Scottish playing English?

Hi Ptarmi,

No, really - I was just mildly amused by the the ambiguity of your posting … :-)

Thing is, I’m a little concerned, as I really need to upgrade my brass-reeded EC, and I’m a bit concerned about all those instruments that have been exported to Scotland … :-(

Re: Scottish playing English?

And, for the record, not only to I like English Concertinas, but I also like Scottish music. Dare I say that on this forum? It seems like I’ve upset enough folk this week already … :-(

Re: Scottish playing English?

"It seems like I’ve upset enough folk this week already …" Oh well you’ve really done it now Mix! :-(
Once you admit to playing the ENGLISH CONCERTINA on this forum that’s the kiss of death …. nobody will ever speak to you again!
Prepare to be SNUBBED! :-D

Don’t worry though, they be only too happy to chat over here:

http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php?showforum=16

{ It’s a great place to find a good Concertina too. }

Let’s be honest though Mix, the only possible way to ensure that you never ever upset anyone on this forum, is just make sure you never post a comment or thread! ;-)

By the way Mix, don’t worry, I can assure you that all those Concertinas had all the necessary Export & Import papers, when they passed through the Border checkpoint!

Re: Scottish playing English?

Ptarmi - but you and I (and many others) all know that the EC - is cheaper than the equivalent Anglo, notwithstanding that it’s useful for ITM, STM, ETM and even WTM. So perhaps it might be better to keep this a closely-guarded secret! ;-)

The EC is still very much a secondary instrument for me, as I’m limited not only by the quality of my instrument, but by my playing experience and ability. I guess that I can only play about 100 tunes on it - all slow-paced ones, and all in "G"! My next step will be to learn to play in "D", and to quicken my playing speed.

Hey, that pic link that you posted seems familiar. I thought that it looked like the Bealach na Ba, near Applecross. Is it?

Re: Scottish playing English?

I see you’ve used your EC for "ITM, STM, ETM and even WTM" ……………… just wondering if you’ve ever used it for S&M? :-D

Bealach na Ba ,,, good guess Mix, but no, it’s the one next door:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khyber_Pass

Ah Applecross, that reminds me, I once won a wee race with the Aberdeen University Cycle Club, cycling to the top without stopping!
Ahhh the good old days …… I can’t even cycle DOWNHILL these days! :-(

We have a wee touch of snow in the garden this morning, but I bet Applecross is really beautiful this morning!

http://www.nafirchlis.co.uk/applecro.htm

All in G eh!
That’s funny cause most of my tunes so far are in F or A because I play with Northumbrian & Scottish Smallpipes players.
However, because I mostly play it at a local Ballad Session, I end up playing songs in all sorts of weird keys.

Incidentally, I was GIVEN a 1900 brass reeded Lachenal EC recently. All I did was contact all my local Salvation Army branches & ask if anyone had a Concertina they no longer needed …. you should try it!
Sure, it needs a bit of work but then it had been sitting in a wardrobe for 30 years! Still it’ll be a nice wee instrument once I get it restored & cheeper than buying on eBay!

Good Luck.
Dick

N.B. Alf wasn’t Scottish after all! :-(

I have just been reliably informed that Alf Edwards WASN’T a Scotsman, after all! :-(

Ah well, sounds like he was a fascinating character, one of those one of a kind individuals, you don’t meet every day. The sort that folk say there are far fewer of around, today.

The bottom line is, I don’t really mind how long my list is …… as long as it is ACCURATE, so many thanks to Stephen Chambers for the info!

Re: Scottish playing English?

I was lucky enough to bump into Jack Beck this week, here in the Glens of Antrim.

http://www.scottishsongandstory.co.uk/

I met Jack first back in 1973, but I hadn’t seen him since 1983, so we had a wee bit of catching up to do.

Anyway, he was telling me that he acquired an old Wheatstone from a musician in Fife, some years ago, but he finally got round to having it fully restored fairly recently, so now he’s working away on it & learning how to play it, so that he can accompany the odd song or two.

So one more Scottish exiled English Concertina player for our list! :-)

Cheers
Dick

Re: Scottish playing English?

Wow! Impressive… ;-)

You might add this link to your details, so it doesn’t get lost, for anyone that might pass that way…

Re: Scottish playing English?

Aye C, I know information like this will not be of interest to many members here, but, at the risk of making my profile even more wordy & unreadable, I’ve added a link anyway. ;-)

Latest Update!

It was my sad duty to move the name of late & much missed Jim Reid, to the "Not to be forgotten" section of this list.

Re: Scottish players of the English Concertina ~ 81!

Of Swings & Roundabouts!

Thanks to Tomb for letting me know that Danny Dove of Gaerlockhead has recently sold his Tenor / Treble & gone over to the Dark Side … he bought a Guitar! :-(

On a brighter note though, thanks to Michael Marino, for letting me know that his wife plays the English Concertina! So we’re still at 81! :-D

Cheers,
Dick

Re: Scottish playing English?

Hi Dick,

I have a name for your Scottish players not resident list… Jim McLean ( https://thesession.org/members/99938 ) now resident in London, composer of The Massacre of Glencoe ( https://thesession.org/tunes/8090 ) and countless other anti-Polaris, Scottish Republican and Scottish historical songs. I interviewed Jim for my project ( https://songsinthekeyofhalflife.wordpress.com/ ). Jim told me that he doesn’t consider himself a fully fluent player but that he used the English Concertina for writing in the days before he was able to buy a piano.

Hope this is of interest,

N
