ITM Mandolin

ITM Mandolin

So I am straying from the flute and having a great time learning to pick tunes on the Mandolin.

I’m looking for some listening ideas for ITM Mandolin, so far I’ve only got Aussies in my list: Louis McManus and Luke Plumb

Thanks!

Re: ITM Mandolin

one man Andy Irvine listen to the blacksmith

Re: ITM Mandolin

Kevin Macleod & Alec Finn "Polbain to Oranmore"CD, also some great mandoline on Mick Moloney’s recordings including "Strings Attached"(Green Linnet).

Re: ITM Mandolin

+1 to aidan crossey’s page

Paul Kelly’s ‘A mandolin album’ is great!

Some Mick Moloney albums.

Its hard to find ITM records dedicated soley to mandolin though. There some good mandolin on Paul Brady’s ‘Welcome Here Kind Stranger’ and also on some of the early Johnstons Records. Peter Ostroushko also plays some sets on some of his albums but they’re hard to Find!

Hope this helps!

Re: ITM Mandolin

I’m not a fan of the band particularly but Iain MacLeod’s rendition of ‘Da Eye Wifie’ on one of Shooglenifty’s albums is draw joppingly beautiful.

Re: ITM Mandolin

Brian Taheny - from Sligo but living in Canada (?) I think. Has a CD out accompanied by Andrew Collins, called "Mando Lore" - the only place I’ve seen to buy it is the CD Baby site. There does be a few clips of him up on youtube as well.

Some great stuff there, thanks to all for contributing!

Re: ITM Mandolin

Personally I think Iain Macleod one of the very best mandolin player of Irish and Scottish music I’ve ever heard. Unfortunately he has no recordings available as yet, though he has recorded most of one with Simon Bradley which is yet to be released. What I have heard just blew me away. Also very partial to Kevin Macleod’s playing

Re: ITM Mandolin

If you are talking about a regular small size Mandolin, I don’t remember Andy Irvine using one. He did have a Bouzouki and Octave Mandolin, which he would capo up to play with Donal Lunny with very beautiful arrangements. There are numerous Andy youtube videos you can play to. I find it interesting to play along an octave higher on a regular mandolin.

Re: ITM Mandolin

I think he has one, without looking to check, on the Brady-Irvine album sleeve. But he also played a waldzither, a German cittern/mandola thingy, or a small Portugese guitarra, from time to time. Always experimenting, Mr I !

Re: ITM Mandolin

I remember Andy Irvine playing mandolin - saw him play one with "Planxty" several times, and Guernsey Pete is quite correct re. the sleeve of the recording with Paul Brady. Iain McLeod played on the first recording by "The House Band".
Mick Moloney’s still the best for me for Irish music.

Re: ITM Mandolin

I meant of course solo/duo recordings of Iain Macleod. But I think we’ll have to agree to disagree; I’ve never cared for Mick Moloney’s mandolin playing, and his guitar playing has not enhanced (in my opinion) any of the ITM records he’s been involved with.

Re: ITM Mandolin

I’ve seen Andy Irvine playing mandolin recently, both solo and with Rens van der Zalm.

Martin Murray is another great Irish mandolin recording artist who you don’t hear much of in that context, perhaps because he does so many other things

I think Kevin MacLeod said he has a new CD coming out with just him and Luke Plumb, which should be good. Kevin would have to be the most dedicated maker at the moment of mandolin recordings exploring Scottish and Irish music, particularly Scottish pipe tunes

Gary Peterson ("Hom Bru") of Shetland is another of my favourites, but I have to say that whether he’s playing Irish reels, Spanish guitar pieces or Chet Atkins rags - it all sounds Shetland!
You can’t go wrong with "No Afore Time":

Re: ITM Mandolin

Andy Irvine used to play lots and lots of mandolin, but in more recent days he’s been more of a bouzouki player. Anyhow - he’s an amazing musician and a great inspiration for anyone who plays CBOM-related instruments.
