Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

My first entry in the session.org upload sweepstakes. http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?fncwuhq5ynx

Avoca 33-AV-106. It’s been cataloged here: https://thesession.org/recordings/2956

Roche was Sligo fiddler James Morrison’s ace pupil; that’s Jackie pictured with James and Paddy Sweeney on the cover of the Milestone at the Garden CD. Morrison is quoted in the liner notes thus: "I can teach Roche how to play but I cannot play myself as well." Jackie was indeed an excellent fiddler, having picked up many of Morrison’s characteristic bowing and fingering tricks, but leaving his own stamp on what he played.

The jazzy guitar backing is interesting too, much like the accompaniment Estwood Davidson played behind Cape Breton fiddler Winston "Scotty" Fitzgerald on his LPs, cut around the same time.

I’ll post a few more of the LPs Jackie made with his various ensembles, most notably the "Kerry Dances" LP, which, I believe, was the first commercial recording of slides.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Kevin - thanks for this. I’mlooking forward to giving it a listen.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Thanks Kevin. (I’ve downloaded it but not managed to play the file yet.)

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Thank you so much Kevin! The scans of the album cover are great, too — I can make them into my CD cover.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Thanks Kevin, much aprpreciated.

Dont, you need to download Winrar or similar programme. Just google it.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Nice one, Kevin!

I thought I still had the Jackie Roche/Timmy Cronin album, but it seems to have wandered off with the Leitrim pixies.

Anyone interested in the Avoca label would be well advised to check Frank Dalton’s page - http://www.oldmusicproject.com/daltonpage.html.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Frank sent me a dub of the Roche/Cronin disc, which I’ll put up here at some point.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Thanks Kevin. Thanks for sharing this.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Can’t quite read the date on the image of the cover. Is it 1958?

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Only had time to play one track so far but it sounds good. Thank you!

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Super!!!

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

It does say 1958. This was release #6 from Avoca, assuming the serial numbers were used in chronological order. Anne Grehy, author of the liner notes, was also backed up on a couple of these LPs by the Jackie Roche Trio - another of their albums has her as one of the featured singers. Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Listening to it now - great stuff. Thanks a million, Kevin!

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Thanks Kevin!

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

this is lovely. thanks!!

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Thanks. Liked that. I started off really enjoying the backing but by the end had decided that ‘interesting’ was a good word for it.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche, Irish Violin LP

Yuck - I don’t like the playing. I guess other people must agree because
you don’t hear much about this fella. He sounds like some American
New England fiddlers who aren’t quite classical, Scottish, Irish or
anything in particular.
