Losing contributions to the discussions.

Losing contributions to the discussions.

Recently several of the contributions I am trying to make to various discussions get lost. It seems to happen at the point where I try to post them, and I suddenly find that both the posting has been lost, and that I am no longer logged in.
Is anyone else having this problem ?
Recreating one’s train of thought on some deeply felt issue is SO trying !
Does Jeremy have a pretentiousness filter working on this site, or what ?

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

So it’s not just me!

It’s happened to me several times Pete. I’ve spent ages carefully crafting a discussion/reply, only to have it disappear into the ether. It’s just impossible to rewrite it as my second attempt is never satisfactory.

It always happens after I press the ‘post’ button. Sometimes I also get a message saying I’ve already posted one message and I’m not allowed to post any more for that day!

There must be a technical fault somewhere.

PS. I’ve saved this post, just in case!

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

If I ever write anything significant into a web form I copy the text before clicking submit. It’s a good habit to get into.

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

Type it in Notepad and then paste it in. Means you can remove all the daft bits though in my case that would mean all of it.

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

It’s happened to me several times and it’s so frustrating! I must get into the discipline of putting the piece together in Word (I suppose Notepad offers the same facility) in the first instance and that way you can’t go wrong.

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

What I most hate is posting incomplete digress to the every other
feckin computer ignorant SOBs probably worse than you to the point Gavin.

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

It’s happened to me loads of times. I just thought it was a feature of my laptop. I’ve adopted RichardB’s solution - except I leave the daft bits in, obviously.

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

It has happened to me a few times as well. I think the web forms must have some form of time out on them. If you spend to long laboring over a comment, it’s gone, just when you think you are posting it. If you spend more than a few minutes typing, it is worth pasting your comments into a text editor before hitting the post button.

me too. but the solution is here. use firefox and install add on lazarus. 🙂never lose a post again

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

Happens to me all the time. I just copy a comment before I hit the post button.

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

Thanks wicked hacker. I’ll give that a try.

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

Just tried posting next weeks winning lottery numbers to this very discussion but they got lost in space. Might try again later…….

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

As long as you don’t lose your trousers, you’ll be OK…

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

I’m hot on the trail of yaalhouse’s trousers!

Cripes, that sounded so wrong I don’t know where to begin. Think I’ll stop now.

I do like SS does, only I’m a dork and I paste it into a spell checker first too. Not only protects against interweb oddities but prevents obsessive compulsive misspelling panic.

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

Jeez I rely on firefox add on spell check! you dont still use IE do you?

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

At home, yes, at work, no. For work I’m on the internet all day, no biggie to poke my head in here once in a while. When I’m home, if I need a fix for something tunelike I can just pick up the fiddle instead of following the latest scuffle on ye olde mustard board. 😉

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

Hey Craic Addict, how do you do that upside-down font?

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

i think
lost post
is a trumpet tune, but its not in the database

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

And the band played the lost post and chorus

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

If you stop in the middle of your post to click on a link in an email
message, then you might be taken out of the editing page
prematurely. Jeremy’s Web server might also have a short default
session duration.

I just tried leaving this half-finished for over an hour. Apparently
session expiration is not a problem.

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

I have also had problems posting comments to the discussions on this web site and being logged out unexpectedly. However, that usually happens to me when I am using my computer at home and not when I am at work (as I am right now).

Re: Losing contributions to the discussions.

I believe there are ways of altering your settings so this doesn’t happen - although it’s never been explained to me how to do it. Hup - Presumably your computer is already set up this way.

If I’m writing a long post, I just try to remember to save it before clicking the ‘post’ button. I f it doesn’t work first time, I can just refresh the page, paste in the text and post again. However, I don’t always remember to save, so readers have been spared many a long-winded post by me over the years.

During login if you check the *Remember Me* box the server should keep you logged in. Otherwise you’ll loose your cookies now & again.
