Old "Óige" video footage

Old "Óige" video footage

A nostalgic look back at the band "Óige" (Irish Gaelic for "Youth"), in video format from the 1990s (from the video vault - for anyone "old" enough to remember):

• Óige - Silver Spear (full version)

• Óige - P. Stands for Paddy

• Óige - The Flower of Magherallyo (Hippodrome Theatre, Birmingham)

• Óige - Girls Put the Fags Out

• Óige - My Bonnie Labouring Boy

(Old video footage digitized to computer format, so it has that old scratchy analogue look and sound). I also realise that the title is a paradox! 🙂

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

I love Cara Dillon!

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

You don’t happen to have Cara singing "Sweet Kingwilliamstown" do you, Murrough. I’ve never heard better. Hope all is well with you and all the "Oige" associates who used to come to Stonehaven in the good old days 🙂.

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Ah yeah, she’s great Earl.

How’s it going Kenny? Aye, those were the days alright. I know there were often TV crews at festivals in the likes of: Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark etc, but I never even thought to ask could I get a copy of the video footage, or what TV stations / film crews they were from back in those days. I may very well have a copy of us doing Sweet Kingwilliamstown in "Audio" format somewhere if that’s any use to you, but it might take me a while to track it down. Do you want me to send you over a copy of it, if I find one? To be honest, all the video footage I have of us is just stuff that ones send me, or old VHS’s that relatives would have recorded from the television and have kept in their home.

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Just had a thought there, Cambridge Festival 1995, MIGHT have been recorded… I honestly can’t remember if there was a TV crew there or not, also all the times we played that Celtic Connections festival up in Glasgow… again, it was so long ago, I can’t remember if there were film crews at either festivals?

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Just a thought, her newer stuff sounds like classic country with the bluesy guitarists ( I’m thinking balcony TV) But I don’t mind it.

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Thanks, Murrough, but I do have the song on the very first "Oige" cassette. Paul’s guitar accompaniment on that was exceptional, I thought, and Cara’s singing as near to musical perfection as you’ll ever get. All the best.

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Fond memories of seeing them play in Brighton many years back.

Are chance of Mary getting out to do anything, Murrough? The Clothes of Sand video that she did (I think for Blas Ceoil) just blows me away.

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

gotta love the haircuts🙂

good stuff

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Did we already have Sweet Kingswillian town recorded on the Inspiration album Kenny? If so, that’s probably as best as I could get you anyhow, so good to know you already have it anyhow. God, they’re a hard thing to get hold of these days.

Nice one, can you remember was it the "Beachcomber" or was it the "Concorde" in Brighton, John? The Beachcomber was actually our very 2nd gig ever in England. A guy called Bill ran it (as far as I can remember), and I’m pretty sure he had connections with the Concorde also, so it wasn’t like we just moved on to the next bigger/better venue the next times we returned to Brighton. You would really need to ask mary that yourself, as I can’t speak on Mary’s behalf, sorry, but I know what you mean in that it would be lovely to hear Mary sing all the time. Could honestly listen to Mary Dillon’s singing all the time.

Yeah, the haircuts and clothes are something shocking alright! 🙂

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Earl
I suggest you listen to Cara’s latest album , a move back to her roots I think you will find .

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

I’ll be sure to do that, which album is the newest?

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Hill of Thieves, its on my Iphone as I type this

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Murrough, yes it would have been the Concorde where I saw you play. In fact I might have seen you play there twice, but memory dims. The venue isn’t there anymore. There is now Concorde2 about half a mile along the road, but it wouldn’t be right for a trad act. Good for bands like The Saw Doctors, though.

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Yeah, the old Concorde was a great wee spot to play. Aye, played there a good few times when touring England, and used to enjoy playing Brighton in general as we had really good experiences there from our very first gig at the Beachcomber, and then in turn the Concorde. I had heard about the orginal Concorde’s demise and that they had opened a Concorde 2 alright, but have never been to the Concorde 2. Thanks for letting me know all about that, as I had always assumed that both venues were on the same spot. Is the Concorde 2 still along the promenade, and do you know if it is still owned by / under the same management as the original Concorde?

Re: Old "Óige" video footage

Yes, it’s down on the lower promenade, east of the old venue, away from the town centre. It’s a funny old place, originally a Victorian tea room. We’ve seen Alabama3 and New Model Army there just recently. I quite like the place despite its seediness, but my wife hates it.

I don’t know about the management, I’m afraid, but I’m sure you could find out with a quick email. Web site is http://www.concorde2.co.uk.
