Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

One cardinal sin at sessions is to divert from the tempo and/or rhythm…I love to change tempo & rhythm when playing with myself…musically speaking.

What do you do, when by yourself, that would be considered taboo at a session???

Character is what you think about in private but don’t do in public.

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

That’s an easy questions, there’s a lot of things I do at home that I generally try to avoid at sessions:

Stop playing in the middle of a tune to brush my teeth and change into pyjamas.

Walk around in my underwear.

Drink buttermilk.

Noodle.

Feed the cat. At sessions I leave that to the landlord.

…and many many more.

Read the dots. Play the same bit over and over again. Swear. Break wind. —on second thoughts, scratch that last one.

Play brilliantly

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Take off my slippers.

"Break wind. —on second thoughts, scratch that last one."

I wish. There was a bloke at our session a few months ago who was having some issues with this and singlehandedly killed the session. It was HORRENDOUS.

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

I put my elbows on the variations and my feet on the ornaments, but then again, it’s OK, it’s my house. I wouldn’t do that at someone else’s house.

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

At home: I ornament a tune to my liking, or in the manner of some artist I admire.

At a session: I play a tune straight as an arrow, and listen to what the crew is doing. Then I try to emulate their version.
(or versions, or versions of versions, etc. etc. ad nauseum, ad infinitum…)

I will kick off my clogs at either.

Drink too much….wait….that one seems to follow me fron place to place…..

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

I play my favourite tunes at home. It’s a shame that nobody plays Fermanagh flute tunes in sessions.

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Play on my own

… some less facetious ones:

Play along with records

Play up the dusty bit

Play a tin whistle

Oh yes. I also sleep at home.

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

play 8 hornpipes, 3 barndances, then a mess of polkas

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

(that’s where you play whatever B part you like)

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Play the melody and the accompaniment at the same time instead of just accompanying someone else.

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

" 0’38" to 1’08" "

Wow 30 seconds!!! You must be really good or really bad!!!

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

I’m not very good at multi-tasking, though.

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Not much, really. If I’m going to break a taboo might as well have a witness. Off the top of my head the only thing I can come up with is ~ play a solo. I try to avoid doing this in session.

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Recite:
"She stood on the bridge at midnight
And gave a little shiver.
She gave a cough,
Her leg fell off,
And floated down the river".

I know I have.

Slow air?

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Play Old-Time tunes.
Practice my tenor banjo.
Pull out my 5 string banjo (don’t worry, I have a conceal and carry permit to operate a banjo in my state (California)).

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Triple-tongueing!

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Whew. Great entries everyone. If not for shanty’s "read the session.org" I think Llig’s "play on my own" would have won. A close one-two finish, no doubt.

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

…and thank you Sharon, it’s just not a good thread without a wind instrument tongue joke, and from a female fluter no less, impressive! [applause]

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

skip parts of a tune cause i dont like them as much as the rest of the tune .

Re: Things You’d Do At Home But Never In a Session

Play riffs from The Tossers or Flogging Molly songs.

which songs?
