Town with most sessions
Where would be the IDEAL place to live for sessions?
Where would be the IDEAL place to live for sessions?
Galway.
there’s a place called Sessionville somewhere in the US - try there?
Hull, UK
Cleggan, West of Clifden in County Galway for good craic though maybe not quantity of sessions but don’t tell anyone. They’ll all want to come and it’ll be ruined as Doolin in Clare was.
Skipjack - I’ve always said of myself that I’ll go to any lengths for a good session. But going to live in HULL? That’s pushing it.
All right, I confess, I’ve never been there. It’s probably not half as bad as we stuck-up Southerners make out. Actually, my grandmother was born just over the Humber in Grimsby.
Talking of up North, I noticed the other day, when searching for sessions in Yorkshire, for a friend who is visiting her sister in Leeds, that Doncaster has a thriving session scene.
Llanidloes in Mid-Wales (about 30 miles inland from Aberystwyth) has two sessions a week. It may not seem like many, but it’s a very small, quiet town.
Zina’s right, oh sweet Galway. But of course if you are of a pioneer kind, you’re kindly welcome to my town. No one has ever hear about the “seshian” in here.
heard, of course. Scuse my English
Wow!! Eurosesh II ! - in Poland!! Let’s think seriously about this one….
Well, I would suggest Ennis where there are sessions every night of the week - I’ve been to two on one Sunday. There’s also good shopping in Ennis if you have any money left after the Guinness (which I don’t actually drink). And you‘’ve got a short hop to the Burren. Also the quality of the music is phenomal as would be expected….
Come to think of it, London’s not a bad place at all for sessions. There’s at least six sessions I’ve heard about on a Sunday, two on a Saturday, one Thursday, one Wednesday, that just leaves Mondays and Tuesdays which I’m not sure about.
What d‘ya reckon y’all?
Ennis is pretty good, I’ll give you that…we went from one to the other, ourselves. Thing is, I like the feel of Galway City, though…
London’s pretty good for Irish music. There’s also Scottish sessions, a French session, at least three English sessions and at least one Old-Timey/Blue Grass session.
Don’t forget Sligo town. Galway is great: I often hear some star musicians play together there, but be careful not to be sick of the music.
And Tokyo? It’s a huge city and you need to move around by metro, though.
Hohner Polkerwork - sorry, wrong thread.
I flit between 3 regular midweek sessions in Doncaster, one of which is totally ITM.
Others within 45 mins drive are -
Sheffield has at least one sesh every night, as does York.
Huddersfield/Halifax corner of W Riding also has a number of strict ITM seshes, as does Leeds.
All in all, Yorkshire is Session County!!!!.
Sensible Sue, if you’re willing to travel around London, there’s a Monday session just started up in Hanwell, near Ealing, and two on a Tueday night, in South Wimbledon and in Richmond (see Sessions). So we’ve got the week covered several times over. But you can hardly call London a town - more of a planet, really.
How could I have forgotten the Kilkenny on Tuesdays….I was only there recently. Derrrrrrr!
Planet London - I like that.
In Bristol (UK) and immediate area, including Bath, it’s possible to go to a session every night of the week. And these are the ones I’ve heard about or actually attend. If you include the broader spectrum of folk music (English, French, etc) there are a couple more available.
Trevor
Stony Stratford on the border of Northants/Bucks is a great session town - there’s always something musical going on there and the place has a disproportionate number of gifted musicians.
In contrast, I’ve been looking for sessions around the Swindon area and can’t find anything - in fact nothing in Wiltshire at all!!
What is it - desert out there? 🙂
I’m kind of surprised no one mentioned Dublin - I’ve personally never played there, but friends say the Harcourt (sp?) is fabulous, and that there are many places to play on any night of the week. It’s a well populated area, so I’m sure there is a large amount of talented musicians….
Is there just lousy craic, or is it something else that makes people not list Dublin?
Heidi
Personally I love the tunes you get in Dublin, but you really have to know where to look. If youre not a local all too often you end up at a Touristy Trad Session and they are no fun at all. But if you know people its grand, some fantastic musicians floating around.
Mike McDaid,
Try Chippenham. There should be something a couple of times a week in the Old Road Tavern.
There was a session on the first Sunday lunchtime of every month at the Huntsman in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Is it still going?
Paul,
Thanks very much - I’m going to be up that way around xmas/New Year time.
