5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

Seeking some help for my memory, but for starters, here’s a few, one being the second ever tune added to this site, by Jeremy, and one or my own ~

"The Bucks Of Oranmore"
https://thesession.org/tunes/2

"The Foxhunters"
https://thesession.org/tunes/511

"The Feakle Fiddle"
https://thesession.org/tunes/3646

You may guffaw, but I’m sure we used to know half a dozen or so, including the first two given above. What other 5-part single reels are there? Help!? I know I had them in one of my notebooks but I haven’t managed to find it.

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

I don’t know about the tunes, but I’ve defintely known a couple of rather ‘Feakle’ fiddlers…

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

Do you mean single reels in that the 5 parts don’t repeat?

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

I like to play The Bucks the way Finbar Fury plays it, doubles. I think the tunes needs the extra space.

Some cheat and and make the Gravelwalks into a 5 part reel…

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

There are tunes that add up to 5 like the Oak Tree and La Cosa Mulligan.

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

The Bucks could be a set in it’s own right - what a tune

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

and the Gold Ring jig the way the Chieftains play it

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

I agree, PF, but watch out; the site is crawling with Bucks haters… I’ve seen that tune unfairly trashed in these forums.

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

Who would trash the Bucks? It’s such an awesome tune.

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched that video

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

I think the full Atholl Highlanders is 5 parts, although they don’t all get played. Or maybe they’re just variations?

And the Bucks is still one of my favourites.

Glen Rd to Carrick
Crushing the Twigs

…off the top of my head. Might think of more..

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

I don’t know how many times I’ve shrieked in disbelief at the Boys of Blue Hill one. It seems that Matt Molloy is not only God, he also has the patience of a saint

YES! Llig… the vid ~ Mmmmmmm! ;-)

Thanks, I needed that…

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

Colonel Frazier

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

Solidmahog ~ a single reel repeats its part, but they are 4-bars, while a double reel has parts that are twice that length, 8 bars, and repeat. Sometimes there are variations on the repeats and consequently some single get written out completely, with the repeats, or an 8-bar part without repetition.

Thanks everyone, almost there, but you’ve definitely helped my misfiring brain. We’ve almost reached half a dozen 5-part single reels. To repeat and link to those already dug up ~

"The Glen Road To Carrick"
https://thesession.org/tunes/2285

"The Jolly Tinker"
https://thesession.org/tunes/1754

"Muilleann Na Maidí" / "Crushing The Twigs"
https://thesession.org/tunes/3080

"Sweeney’s Wheel"
https://thesession.org/tunes/1025

But these, I prefer them as they usually come, only one of which is a ‘single reel” ~

"The Gravel Walks" ~ A single reel, but I think it is best kept at 4 single reel parts rather than converting the 4th part into a double reel?
https://thesession.org/tunes/42

"Colonel Frazier" ~ a double reel, but sweet just the same…
https://thesession.org/tunes/1209

"The Oak Tree" ~ 3-part double reel
https://thesession.org/tunes/212

"Jackson’s" / "La Cosa Mulligan"
https://thesession.org/tunes/1665
This is an ‘odd’ one, the C part being played only once through, so in a sense finishing on a 2-part single reel, but the first two parts are double reels, but it would add up as far as measures, if not as far as structure, meaning 5 4-bar parts that repeat, basically ~ AABBCCDDEE, a total of 40 bars…

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

That’s now half a dozen, and some of those I was trying to remember have showed up, but I’ve a niggle there’s at least one more… I’ll keep thinking on it, playing, and looking… :-/

Thanks a lot, this has been a help…

Thanks Ceolachan

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

Does La Cardeuse count? Five parts, I think, but the order is unusual.

"La Cardeuse" ~ as it stands, is a ‘double’…

The Log: https://thesession.org/tunes/8566

The only place I’ve ever heard that tune is on Mike McGoldrick’s album, though I’m sure he didn’t write it… it’s a great tune, I think it should be more well-known!

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

I generally hear older musicians play Colonel Frazier as a single reel, while younger musicians tend to play it doubled…

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

I think Conal O’Grada plays it double on top of the coom

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

Sweeney’s wheel is such a great tune, nobody plays it around here, I was fortunate to find it in one of my collections and it made me get ahold of every Jackie Daly album I could find until I found the one that had it. Still nobody plays it around here.

Re: 5-Part Single Reels ~ not 2, 3, 4 or 6 ~ 5!

Yes, "The Graf Spee", thanks Silver. "The Log" is one I didn’t know about and haven’t ever played. I’ll have to chase up a listen and give it a try.

Yes Dragut Reis ~ "Colonel Frazer", getting back into it and forgetting session takes on it and more contemporary listens, it has the structure of a single reel. Do you know if anyone has recorded it as a single?

“Colonel Frazer” played as a 5-part single reel:

This one I wish, along with the other, was still available, in WAV form at least, or even MP3, for others to enjoy and find inspiration in…

Much thanks DR, greatly appeciated…
