music in the Clare style

music in the Clare style

I’m searching for fiddle tunes in the east or west Clare style… [and dare I ask…..standard or ABC notation] Any suggestions?
Thanks much!

Re: music in the Clare style

Get a copy of Ceol an Clair, an old recording that features Bobby Casey, Junior Crehan, Joe Ryan, John Kelly, and Patrick Kelly (https://thesession.org/recordings/2401). The tunes are common Clare tunes and the playing is brilliant.

Re: music in the Clare style

Um, if you’re looking for something in the Clare (or any other style), then presumably that stylistic aspect of it is what the sheet music can’t communicate.

Re: music in the Clare style

Also, “Traditional Fiddle Music from East Clare” by Paddy Canny.

For more recent examples, try A Clare Conscience.

And don’t use sheet music or abcs. Learn the tunes from the recordings. Short cuts to learning this stuff tend to fall, well, short.

Re: music in the Clare style

Thanks Will and Silver Spear…..I guess I should have asked for tunes that lend themselves to a Clare style of play or tunes that are commonly played in that region.

Re: music in the Clare style

You may want to look at David Lyth’s ‘Bowing styles in Irish Traditional Music’ vol 2, if you’re going the notation route anyway.

Transcriptions with bowing (not flawless but useful enough) including Canny, Crehan, Patrick Kelly, John Kelly, Joe Ryan, Casey and others.

Re: music in the Clare style

Well, he recordings suggested include lots of tunes common in Clare. You’d also do well to listen to other instruments–concertina in particular–for a soak in the “Clare style.”
