Permission to record tunes, and royalties

Permission to record tunes, and royalties

I know I could do this research myself but I also know there are experts on here who might be able to tell me the best way to get permission to record each of these tunes, and to pay appropriate mechanical royalties:

Black Pat’s - Tommy Peoples
Rainbow’s End - Vincent Broderick (deceased)
Road to Garrison - Maurice Lennon

Also what to do to pay royalties if selling tracks on itunes?
Cheers,
Ian

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

You don’t need permission though it’s polite if possible. You don’t pay any royalties, you register with MCPS (for UK), they charge you a small fee and distribute the royalties to all concerned. You can’t legally press any CD’s in this country without registering with MCPS and once you have it’s all pretty straight forward. Goog luck. http://www.prsformusic.com/creators/membership/MCPSroyalties/Pages/MCPS.aspx

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

Thanks - I’m in Canada actually. I’ve heard of a similar royalty distributing organization here but got the impresion from a singer I know that it was only for songs.

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

This is where you are required to go Ian. There may be an Ottawa office.

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

Thanks - I thought it was http://www.cmrra.ca. Do you know the difference?

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

I think CRIA allows you to pay a blanket fee for the full album. They cross check the tunes with Socan/IMRO etc who then distribute any royalties. Be aware that Comhaltas has negotiated with IMRO to be paid the bulk of recording and performance royalties for trad stuff which would definitely affect Vincie Broderick’s estate.

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

I thought SOCAN collected royalties for public performances, radio plays, etc.

There’s also SODRAC http://www.sodrac.ca/Accueil_EN.aspx.
A couple of my tunes were recorded recently and I was advised to register them with SODRAC to make sure I got royalties (must get around to it :-) )

Confusing, eh?

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

SOCAN collect and distribute Jeeves auld chap.

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

Thanks again - I’ll look into the CRIA option of paying a blanket fee.

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

You’re lucky. Unless things have changed here we have to register each piece with Harry Fox and pay for a minimum of 1000 copies by the minute. Two tunes of a total of less than 6 minutes cost me nearly $100.00 US when I did it years ago and the rates have gone up. The neat catcher: The requestor is required to find all the appropriate copyright holders and list them. If he misses it is his fault and he remain liable. Like most of our copyright laws this is carefully designed to help out the licensing agency and the copyright holder and everyone else be d..med.

Re: Permission to record tunes, and royalties

Above from US just in case it is not clear.
