Top 100 tunes

Guys

End of the year is a good time for top 100 lists, so here is a list of the top 100 tunes downloaded using Tunepal in the past year. I’ve filtered it to remove what I believe to be false positives. All Charlie Lennon’s - lol
jim,,,

And the same to you,, skooter500 : )

Re: Top 100 tunes

Kesh Jig, The 98 and Kesh, The 45 ? Seems a bit strange.

Re: Top 100 tunes

Do you think a lot of those numbers are derived from people testing out the software by playing really obvious tunes at it, rather than people using it to identify an unknown tune?

Re: Top 100 tunes

Tho’ I’m not a guy thanks for the list Skooter! What do the no’s after the names indicate? Also, would it be a big chore for you if i were to ask to specify which dance tune each is?
Happy New Year from the Decies!

Re: Top 100 tunes

I would think all of those tunes listed would have been posted here - but what’s that one 9th from the bottom - “The Drunken Hussar” ?
I also see that “Fr.Kelly’s” gets 2 mentions, as does “Kiss the Maid behind The Barrel”. How does that come about ?
While I’m here, “Skooter” do you still have any recordings from Conal O’Grada’s workshop at Ballyvourney earlier this year, particularly the polkas, including the one he tried to teach in under 2 minutes ? I was struggling with unfamiliar technology at the time, and didn’t get them recorded.

“The Drunken Hussar”? So was he wounded before, or after his drinking spree?

Re: Top 100 tunes

Why stick them in alphabetical order? The point is that they are listed in order of how popular they are (what the numbers are there for).

I would be guessing the duplicate tracks comes up when the programme has identified a different source depending on how it has been played eg thesession.org vs Norbeck’s.

Re: Top 100 tunes

It’s a list of 100 tunes, isn’t it?

Re: Top 100 tunes

Yeah,it’s kind of confusing as a list. One would expect if the Kesh is most popular it would be no 1 in my simple way of thinking, and even with joint placings, otherwise I’d have expected it to be 100 not 98.Oh well,it’s good anyway to have these lists as guidelines for learning tunes widely known that will therefore travel well across the globe.

Re: Top 100 tunes

No cil cre. “98” means it has been searched for 98 times using Tunepal.

That is why the order of the list is significant, and totally butchered when it is reordered alphabetically.

Re: Top 100 tunes

Thanks for pointing out those details, Alistair.
Sorry for any confusion on my part. 🙂

Stupid bollocks

What a stupid teenage girl-esque posting.
I don’t think you really understand how this stuff works!
Popularity charts are completely missing the point about a tune and how it exists in that moment you are playing it with whoever and wotteffah…

So I probably shouldn’t list my top 10 choices of wig glue?

Re: Top 100 tunes

Oh please do Ben, …. I lost my toupee in a recent storm & could use some good ideas! 😛

Re: Top peruke adhesive…

Pointless! SyrupStik is the only contender…

Re: Top 100 tunes

The number indicates how often the tune was downloaded, not how many times the tune was searched for. The reason some tunes appear more than once is because it could be in several tunebooks. For example, if you search for the Kesh jig, you will probably get hits from thesession.org, Henrik Norbeck etc.

And yes, probably the reason why the Kesh is so popular is people playing their favourite tune just to test it out

Re: Top 100 tunes

Thanks for clearing that up, Bryan.

Re: Top 100 tunes

There nothing I would rely on in that list, but it’s interesting. I didn’t see any problem with posting it.

Re: Top 100 tunes

Ben,

Before you provide another list, please do stop and think about those duplicated titles. Might one possibly be a jig and another a reel, in other words, not the same tune?

Re: Top 100 tunes

MacCruiskeen, thanks for bringing that up. I did consider the possibility, “Father Kelly’s” is the one possibility out of those which have duplications.Foxhunter’s wasn’t listed twice, but I believe it is the slip jig.

There is a “Tommy People’s Jig” as well as the reel.

Re: Top 100 tunes

I actually find it interesting that the top 100 tunes were only searched a total of 3770 times. I would have guessed higher numbers. That’s only about 10 top 100 searches a day.

Re: Top 100 tunes

My sources tell me that Justin Bieber is more popular than the Kesh.

It’s the hair. Too few session players are adopting Mr. Bieber’s dramatic forward sweep.

Re: Top 100 tunes

Too few session players even have that option any more!

Re: Top 100 tunes

Okay. I’ve got this image of some kid with Justin Bieber hair approaching a session group with his bodhran and asking if he can join.

Somebody make it go away.
