Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

Do you have a copy of this CD?

Fiddle Sticks - Irish Traditional Music From Donegal

And (if so) can you please tell me the tune titles of the two mazurkas on track 13 ?

Thanks!

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

@Mix O’Lydian

I have the CD, but the sleeve notes don’t give the titles. They are played by Proinsias O Maonaigh and Mairaead Ni Mhaonaigh. I’ll have a listen to see if I recognise them

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

stoneboy2, or Mix, any chance you might see if this is the 2nd tune on track 8?

@ Ben Steen

It’s not the J S Skinner Spey in Spate reel in D major. It has a much more minor feel. Unless it is a much transformed Donegal setting, but it sounds very different to me. It is called John Stewart on the sleeve notes.

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

Thanks, just a long shot, & thanks for identifying the mazurkas.

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

Thanks for all the responses …

… and special thanks to stoneboy2 for correctly I/D-ing both tunes!

Incidentally, the second mazurka is somewhat reminiscent of St. Anne’s Reel - at a different metre, of course!

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

Yeah, stoneboy2 has them right. They also appear together on Ceol Aduaigh, the CD recordedby Mairéad ní Mhaonaigh and Frankie Kennedy. Tommy Peoples has recorded the first one as well.

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

I learned the first mazurka as ‘Johnny Doherty’s’, but then I have a recording of Doherty referring to it as Kitty’s Fancy, so I figure I should defer to the man hiself — Kitty’s Fancy it is, to me at least.

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

No probs, now for some payback !

As I don’t have the sleeve notes, can anyone confirm if the mazurkas in the Ben Lennon Natural Bridge track three set are ;

Firstly;
https://thesession.org/tunes/1332

Secondly the following tune in a different key to that given in the sheet music here;
https://thesession.org/tunes/1323

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

That is to say the same set as Proinsias O Maonaigh and Mairaead Ni Mhaonaigh but playing the second in a different key, or is the second a different tune ?

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

@stoneboy2

Can’t help with your spin-off question, I’m afraid.

However, I have noted your identification of the two mazurkas in the comments section of the Fiddle Sticks 1991 recording:

Re: Tune Titles Needed for Two Mazurkas

Thanks Mix O’Lydian, always good to cross-reference. I should have thought to do it.
