Re: Who was Tom Ward…

Most likely General Thomas Ward, who apparently served in the French army but was executed.

Re: Who was Tom Ward…

I heard that he was a fiddler from Co. Lietrim, I think he was the great uncle of the publican at Ward’s Pub. @albrown - ask Tom & he’ll tell you the story.

Re: Who was Tom Ward…

From somewhere in Ulster perhaps? I know the tune as the Mourne Mountains…

Re: Who was Tom Ward…

Actuallly, it stems from a tune that was played in the 1920s by fiddler Tom Ward of the Kilfenora Céilí Band. He called it ‘The Downfall of Paris’ , but as there is a more well known ‘hornpipey’ tune under that name, it became know as ‘Tom Ward’s Downfall of Paris’. This became shortened to ‘Tom Ward’s Downfall’ and it was under this title that Michael Coleman recorded it.

No. I just invented that story. In fact, there are Wards in my family and I’ll find out if there was a Tom so I can invent another story.

The tales that have come my way concern the ‘fiddler’…

Re: Who was Tom Ward…

It’s in O’Neill’s as the Mourne Mountains, certainly interesting to know where the other name came from
