Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Bodhran Bliss - long time poster on this board - has passed away after a short battle with cancer.

I, more than most, knew his ascorbic wit and humour having borne the brunt of it at many a session. I hope those of you who perhaps crossed-swords with him on these pages took it in the spirit intended and recognise that he was simply a man who loved music and debate in equal measure.

I’m sure others can check the details but i think one of his posts generated one of the longest threads in the history of the mustard pages.

As a long-time friend and bandmate it is hard to describe how unique a character Paddy McGinley was.

I’ll leave it to the man himself to take his bow….

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Sad news indeed.

A great loss to both Antrim Sessions & the Mustard Board.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Sad.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Very sad news. :(

I enjoyed his acerbic wit on the message board, while over the years was also the recipient of some very kind and encouraging e-mails. We always meant to meet up during Willie Week but never quite managed it. A true gent.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

So sad. I always hoped to meet up with him someday. We exchanged a few emails about American politics (we tended to agree more than we disagreed) and our mutual hopes of visiting each other in either Antrim or Washington State. I appreciated his point of view on many things even if I did have to read it several times to understand his meaning.

RIP Mr. bliss.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

That is very sad news. He was one of the stalwarts of the Mustard Board. May he Rest in Peace.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

I am so sorry to hear this. His posts were always welcome for both content and style. I always thought we’d get on if ever we had met.

I will miss his contributions to this site. When next I pull out my flute, I will play one for the lad.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Very sad, he will be sorely missed, I really enjoyed his posts.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Quite a shock to read this.
I recall I had a few good natured spats with him over the years, and we corresponded by email a couple of times.
A real character, he will be sorely missed.
Very sad news indeed.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

So sorry to hear that. I never met him in person but as has been said, a real character on the board. Rest in Peace Patrick.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Totally shocked to hear this. One of the few on this forum whose postings I actively sought out. I am embarassed to say that I never made the effort to go and meet him in Belfast even after exchanging emails and making vague arrangements to do so. It should be a lesson to us all…life is short, make time for the little things that can mean a lot. I’ll miss you BB, RIP.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

How very sad.

Our lives all hang by the most slender of threads. We will miss him.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Oh, no!! I would suggest that Mustardia is a poorer place with his passing. We’ll have a tune in his honor in my house tonight.

Bodhran Bliss -Sad news….Although only a name you felt that you knew him. He took some good natured stick over the years but gave as good as he got. God rest him.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Damn. 🙁

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

I hope he’s teaching and playing with the best of them up there.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Such a shame to hear that news.
I imagine that when he reached the pearly gates, and they tried to give him a harp, he pushed it right back in their faces, and started handing out drums!
Rest in peace, oh Blissful one!!!

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

I certainly hope not, Al. Certainly he is finally free to play the tunes on mandolin.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

this is such sad news. i enjoyed his posts, and the responses to them, i will miss him and i wish him peace as well as bliss.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Let’s all raise a glass to his memory. I enjoyed his posts, and we are better off for his presence. What more can be said about someone?

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Well I liked the bloke.

He really feckin’ bugged me for yonks … until I got it, of course (I was a bit slow), but he forgave me.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Two of my real-world session colleagues met him earlier this
this year in Antrim. By their account, he was a nice fella. I loved
his well-crafted session.org persona with the faux big ego. Enjoy
your time on the planet, it’s not a rehearsal as they say. Every
time I walk into a session, I’m grateful that I can be there.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

RIP Patrick

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

I second hup. I loved his well-crafted session persona. I’m sad to hear of his departure.

I shall have to get a larger spoon, his Good Work must go on.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

I liked him too. I would have liked to have met him. Great SOH - very tongue in cheek… We’ll always remember him as the best bodhran player in the entire world!

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Even a relative newcomer like me had a chance to recognize what he was.

Sad indeed. The great members here are always young in my mind. They should not have to go.

Someone who know his family should pass this thread to them.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Oh dear! Its sad to hear of the departure of a mustard member especially when he was the best … a great loss to the board and to the bodhran. RIP

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

What a shame. The man was a legend in his own mind! ;^)~ God bless you, Bliss — we’ll play one in your honor, with plenty of goat-whacking.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

I’m sorry to hear it. Rest in peace.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

sad news indeed

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Sad news. I enjoyed the discussions he stirred up. He did make serious points as well though, I think.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

He’ll be sadly missed. A real character who defended the use of the bodhran in this music with characteristic style, wit and pugnacity. My condolences to all his friends amd family.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Yes a great guy RIP Patrick

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Michael?????????????

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

I’m really sorry to hear about this.

Like many on the board, I exchanged several comments and views with BB over the years but even when we disagreed it was always done with good humour.

I never met him either but I’m sure we’d have got along just fine.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

A great loss to this community. RIP.

"Someone who know his family should pass this thread to them."

Aye, I think that would be a very sweet thing to do. Maybe jfiddlerh can pass it along after it’s been up for a few days.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Guys, thanks for the comments. I will of course pass them on to Paddy’s family. It will be a great comfort for them to know others thought as much of him as they did.

It is testament to his force of personality that his passing is resonating amongst the GAA fraternity as it is in trad-music.

http://hoganstand.com/Forum/MessagePage.aspx?PageNumber=0&TopicID=69613

You can tell by the comments that ‘Patrique’ was very much in the image of ‘Bodhran Bliss’.

Re: Bodhran Bliss / Patrick McGinley -

Somehow RIP just doesn’t fit the man, real or self-invented. I’m listening to him sing as I write this, what great craic, and I’m smiling. Somehow I can’t believe there’s an end to that spirit of joy and mischief, so in my mind, no rest for such a spirit….

Silverspear just sent me this news.

Save us a space round the table Patrick, and say hello and enjoy the craic with all those that have gone before us. I wish we’d managed to share a firm handshake and table before now…

Patrick McGinley - the digital wake -

Jeremy, our webmaster, has discussed about having something added to the ‘details’ of one of our members after their passing, and it might be a possibility, ideally someone like yourself ‘jfiddlerh’ to consider a short metion, respect, that might be added to Patrick’s details here.

https://thesession.org/members/15086

I’d approached Jeremy with this idea of ‘something’ for the one we knew here as ‘Bannerman’, to touch base with the real energy behind the alias - Brian Prior, also taken out by cancer ~

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

That’s a nice idea Ceol - maybe even just providing a link to this type of condolences thread - or including it with the "something".

Re: Bodhran Bliss / Patrick McGinley

Of similar minds, I too was thinking it would be good to have a link as to here, in memory and respect…

I only just chased up that YouTube linked to from the thread of Patrick’s ‘oldstrings’ gave above, brilliant… Please, all who come here, check it out. To repeat that contribution - - -

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Oh bugger. He was one of my favourites. More sense than almost all the rest put together.

I’ll miss you, BB.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

I’ll really miss him too. I second EB. I looked forward to hearing his comments on things. That clip of him playing is amazing.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

As with mybc, I’ve only just picked up on this news, for similar reasons.
"spirit of joy and mischief" (ceolachan) - that’s how I remember him through his posts. Would that there were more of his kind. I’ll miss him with affection and sadness.
The suggestion that a tribute, or something of that nature, be added to the profile of a deceased member, is an excellent one. At the very least, it would be a permanent record that the person is no longer around.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

The goats of Ulster warily peer out from their hiding places in disbelief. As the King said unto his servants, know ye not that a prince and great thwacker has fallen today?

Rest easy bodhran bliss. (It was lower case, y’all. Point of order.)

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

This is very sad news. There’s was always a touch of Myles na gCopaleen about his humour and outlandish claims (though many were probably true).

I discovered he’d been recorded too - http://www.jpmoreaumusic.com/uk/inis.html.

In deference to his preference for the lower case perhaps he should be known here as bb ‘bodhrán’ king!

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Good Lord, that’s a surprise.. the last thing one expected to see tuning in here. Bliss, apart from being the greatest bodhran player in existence - also had many other facets, if I recall correctly. Who remembers his stories about being caught in the wrong bar during the troubles and then it seemed he was also a follower of cricket, as well as having a grá for the GAA. We’ll miss you Bliss..

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Danny, that is the quintessential Blisster thread; notice that it covered:
Bodhrans
Performance
Self-aggrandizement
Pontificating
Rampant silliness
In short, everything that makes Mustardia worth checking on.

But I also notice that you are in charge of the massive memorial statue. Get to it….

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Morning all!

How sad to read of his passing. He wrote some of the wittiest comments I’ve read over the years. He also came over as being able to laugh athimself. I literally cried laughing with that video of him playing at the GAA.

I’m sure he’ll be leading the craic upstairs now.

Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas dá anam!

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Very sad news - it’s the loss of another mustard board icon really…

Very sorry that I was never able to meet him in person… he sounded like great craic!

Rest in peace

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

I never met him in person, but it felt as though I had, and I wish I did. We corresponded a bit both on and off this board, and I got to know him a little, and liked him a lot. I’ll miss you, bodhran bliss. RIP, Patrick.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Yeah that is so very sad to here, I think what my dear friend Ptarmigan said earlier here just sum’s it up for me around here…

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

What terribly sad news. As many have echoed above, bliss and I also good naturedly banged heads on the mustard board, but also exchanged many wonderful private e-mails on such varied topics as American politics, Irish politics, and of course sports - most notably hurling and baseball.

bliss even once offered to help my wife get a job coaching girls basketball in Norn Iron. What actual connections he had I ‘ll never know - LOL. He may have had an acid tongue, but he also had a big heart of gold. Rest in Peace.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Very sad. Deepest condolences to family and freinds.

‘No it is the fiddle for me. If I accept that I am not going to be the greatest in the world, I could limit myself to say Kevin Burke standard. Even an old man like me could achieve that in two years.’

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

He always made me laugh and as Dow said he was the greatest bodhranista in the world. What more can you ask?

I will miss him.

He was very much an integral part of this mustard board and will be missed. My condolences to his family.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

Rest in Peace, Bliss. Liked your posts.

Patrick McGinley

I know we are supposed to celebrate a life well lived when a good soul passes on. And I do celebrate the larger than life presence which Patrick McGinley was always throwing in our faces. Good man, bb. But in all selfishness, I’m a bit p*ssed! A wit like his does not just happen. He didn’t merely get everyone’s goat. He played his part so well.

You are missed.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

We raised our glasses and dedicated a rousing set* to Bliss this past Sunday. And welcomed a new lad — bodhran and whistle — to the session. Young fellow, not old enough to drive, and drinking root beer, with great enthusiasm and rhythm. I think ol’ bb was smiling down on us.

Re: Bodhran Bliss (Patrick McGinley) - RIP.

How *do* you drink root beer rhythmically?
