Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

I stumbled on Paddy’s playng on Comhaltas’s website today, and was immediately struck by this first reel. No information is listed on Comhaltas’s website, thought someone here might know. Without a name for a tune or a handle on a recording to tie it to, I don’t know where else to turn.

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

reminds me of Doctor Gilbert.

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

Really? I don’t hear Dr. Gilbert’s at all.

It starts out a little like Lads of Laois, but quickly diverges. Sounds like an adaptation of a classical piece to me. It’s ties a fiddler’s fingers into knots:

X: 1
T: ?
S: Paddy Gavin
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
K: Em

Frank, I see you’re a piper. Here’s a transposition into a (slightly) friendlier key:

X: 1
T: ?
S: Paddy Gavin
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
K: Bm
fe|:d~B3 FBdF|c~F3 cF_Bc|BFBc dcdB|cf{a}f_f =fgfe|
d~B3 FBdF|c~F3 cF_Bc|BFBf edce|1 dfcf B2 fe:|2 dfcf Bcde||
f~A3 fagf|e~A3 eafe|d~F3 dfed|c~F3 _F=Ffe|
d~B3 FBdB|c~F3 cF_Bc|BFBf edce|1 dfcf Bcde:|2 dfcf B2 fe||

It fits a little better on fiddle in Dm:

X: 1
T: ?
S: Paddy Gavin
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
K: Dm
AG|:FD D/D/D A,DFA,|E~A,3 EA,^CE|DA,DE FEFD|EAA^G ABAG|
FD D/D/D A,DFA,|E~A,3 EA,^CE|DA,DA GFEG|1 FAEA D2 AG:|2 FAEA DEFG||
A~C3 AcBA|G~C3 GcAG|F~A,3 FAGF|E~A,3 ^G,A,AG|
FD D/D/D A,DFD|E~A,3 EA,^CE|DA,DA GFEG|1 FAEA DEFG:|2 FAEA D2 AG||

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

Sorry for a few typos in the Dm version. The second G in the 4th bar of the A part goes back to G natural.

What Gavin’s tune reminds me most of is the first two parts of Beethoven’s Fur Elise….

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

Fur Elise is what I hear too…..

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

The tune has overtones of something foreign to me - Quebecois, perhaps.

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

…Yes, I can hear Für Elise in the 2nd part - not so obvious from the 1st part. Maybe more German than Quebecois, then.

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

he may have wrote it himself? seems like a very boxey tune

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

Thanks for the comments and abcs. I hadn’t made the Fuer Elise connection myself, but on re-listening I can definitely hear it. In any case, a catchy tune, though a challenging one on the chanter by the looks of it.

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

Well I didnt’ say I thought it was Doctor Gilbert’s. Thanks for the transcriptions, it’s a lovely tune I would like to wrap my head around it myself.

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

I merely meant it had a similar character to that tune. I think certain bars of this tune are very characteristic of it, as unique as it might be as a whole.

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

Hello,

I am the Paddy Gavin you are talking about. Sorry about the confusion over the tune.
The name of the tune is Widgeon Wings.
I composed it one day after spending an evening at the edge of a pond of water waiting for the Widegon ( a migratory duck) to come in. I could hear the Widgeon whistling in the air around me and spent the entire evening just listening to their music.
Originally composed on the piano as a lament but I found it too sorrowful personally so decided to change it to reel tempo.

Thank you for the kind comments about the tune, brought a smile to my face on hearing the comparisons of this tune to those of great composers.

Re: Anyone know the name of the first reel here (Paddy Gavin)

Lovely tune, Paddy.
