A few D dorian tunes?

A few D dorian tunes?

We don’t play many tunes in D dorian. I like each one of them when they come around. Have you heard any good D dorian tunes that I might be able to listen to online?
We play "The Broken Pledge", which I see also has a jig version ~

I did a search for D dorian slides & nothing came up.
The site lists only a few polkas in this key, including
"Dark Girl Dressed In Blue"

Re: A few D dorian tunes?

I don’t think I ever heard The Dark girl as a dorian one. We’ll blame McKenna I suppose?

Re: A few D dorian tunes?

I was surprised to see that too, Prof. Looks like it was sorted in the comments. Did McKenna record Dark girl in dorian mode or was it mislabelling of tunes?

Re: A few D dorian tunes?

No, everybody plays the two tunes the way McKenna recorded them (and later Frankie Gavin). Meant blame him for the non dorian setting.

Re: A few D dorian tunes?

megapop, I didn’t search all tunes. I tried just slides & since there were no matches I put in polkas & there were 4 or 5. What I hope to find though are recordings.

…and if you are backing any of these suggestions, leave the Bb (or Bbmaj7) alone!

Re: A few D dorian tunes?

Academic point, but perhaps of interest: The chief distinction between D Dorian and D minor (Aeolian) is that the former contains the note B natural and the latter B-flat.

Can tunes that have no Bs of any description in them (Humours of Scarriff, Julia Delaney, etc. etc.) really be said to be in D Dorian?

Trying to shoehorn Irish tunes into Greek/Church modes doesn’t always work. Convenient lazy shorthand though.

Re: A few D dorian tunes?

Love it! You even put in one from Mr. Hardiman.

That Liam, he’s a great composer 😉

Re: A few D dorian tunes? breakin’ the drought?

I don’t know if anyone will catch this post on a 3 years past thread, but since tomorrow’s forecast is rain I’m planning to revisit as many of the tunes (from above) as I can.
Stay dry & warm; if you can.
